Why is diesel more expensive than petrol? 8 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Crude awakening asked HJ and he replied :- Why does diesel fuel cost up to eight pence per litre more than petrol? It features a lower fraction of the crude oil from which it is made, requires less processing and is used in volume by commercial vehicles, so should be cheaper. -
Skoda Fabia - PROBLEMS WITH SKODA FABIA 28 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Good afternoon, I have a 2002 Skoda Fabia 1.9tdi and recently the following problems have occurred: The audible warning tone that sounds when the indicators are on, when I leave the car and leave the lights on or the fuel light comes on has stopped working. The front electric window switches sometimes change which window they decide to open and the driver's side seems to be very intermittent anyway. -
Why hasn't it been done. 21 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Surely BMW or Mercedes should have done this by now, lop off the wing mirrors to make the car look nice and sleek and instead mount tiny cameras in their place feeding back to small screens on each pillar. IMHO would look nicer and would make cars slightly more aerodynamic so saving fuel. I'm sure somehow this could also immeminate the blindspot? Any thoughts on the above and why it hasn't been done, or anything else that you think should be on cars now that isn't? -
2005/55 Vw Phaeton 3.0 TDI V6 4motion - Ticking noise coming from near side rear wheelarch 9 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Hello, can anyone shed any light on why my VW Phaeton is ticking as I drive along? If I stand with my ear to the near side rear wheel it is quite loud. Is it the fuel pump? Rear passengers can hear it when driving at low speed. Another suggestion from a friend is the rear heating/AC system working, should it have a loud tick on a vehicle like this?! Can anyone give me some advice? -
Any - Variable Hyperbole improves Low End Expectations 19 Jan 2012 (Forum)
No mention of a working prototype. The usual promises of Big Engine performance from Small Engine package. Improved fuel economy etc etc. We've already got the technology for low RPM boost. It's called a rootes Blower. The latest ones are quite efficient. And you can easily vary the boost from zero to maximum with a simple bypass valve. -
All - Fule Save? 31 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Just brimmed the tank with another tank of Shell 'fuel save' and calculated, to my horror, that I'd averaged only 38.5mpg-below my last tank of Asda Swill at 39.9mpg and below my long term, average of 41.5mpg. Outrageous! Something should be done about it. -
Mazda 6 - Anyone here that's driven a sport 2.3 and a 2.5? 29 Dec 2011 (Forum)
I'm wanting a car with more 'zoom zoom' and the prices on the 1st gen sport with the 2.3 engine seem pretty good to me, but I love the shape of the 2nd gen The new engine is 9bhp 'superior' and benefits from direct injection so I'm assuming that fuel consumption would stay about the same as although the new engine is more powerful, direct injection is supposed to be more economical (as supported by Mazda's published 'figures'). Has anyone had or even just driven both? -
Chrysler Voyager - cutting out on road test 24 Oct 2011 (Forum)

Citroen Xsara 1.9TD (1998 R Reg) - Loss of Power 15 Oct 2011 (Forum)
At higher speed and when have momentum the acceleration feels much better but I can't be completely sure of whether it is still down on previous performance.I have self diagnosed it to be the turbo not kicking in but I am very much the novice so may be completely wrong. I have no loss of fuel economy nor any other signs of smoke other then the usual diesel puffs. It goes in for a service in a weeks time so hopefully they will advise me then but I want to prepare myself for them telling me some bad news. -
BMW 3-Series E36 (1991 - 1998) - 96 2.5 intermittent injector light showing! 4 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Also if I dip the clutch the light goes out in a similar way and car drives normally. Problem only happens maybe once or twice a week......Have changed the fuel filter to no avail....are we looking at a lifter pump on its last legs or an inector problem??????????? Any advice appreciated. -
Now what? 20 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I've had it 10 years. I'm now doing 60 miles a day mainly on A roads it's showing its age and the fuel costs are biting. I'd made up my mind to spend somewhere around 7 or 8K and get a 2 yr old used fiesta or focus diesel (possibly an econetic) as seeing as how I intend to keep the car 8-10 years I assumed the better economy and lower tax would be beneficial in the long run. -
Renault Kangoo - Intermittent Speedo / Odometer 16 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Incidentally, is the sensor linked to an engine management unit? (if it is, then is the 'zero' speed indicated by the odometer making the EMU reduce the fuel supply, for example, thus causing the running 'problem' described above)? Can anyone help please? -
any - In defence of the car part 2 8 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Coach costs for 2 = £140 + hotel £80 at Gatwick + extra food costs! plus taxi to carmarthen bus station. so back to the car then, Airport parking £54, fuel £70 @1.40 a litre, and 4 hours instead of 8 going and 14 hours returning. (with being forced to wait 6 hours on return for 1st coach) it's a no brainer really. -
If only everything in life was as reliable as ... 22 Jul 2011 (Forum)
On the way home down the M6 and M1 on Friday I spotted two Passats and one Golf - all 57-58 reg on the hard-shoulder – presumably fuel injector failures? The only other breakdown I spotted was a Peugeot 306 - although I should probably discount 10+ year old cars from the stats. On the way up this morning I thought I'd see if this was a coincidence - amazingly I spotted another two Passats and one Golf! -
LDV or something - Very slow lorries 22 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I know there's no minimum enforceable speed limit on motorways but I feel 40mph is unreasonable. I've a feeling that the driver has a fuel economy bonus to meet which is set by his haulage company. As such, I've half a mind to write to them under the 'how's my driving?' offer. Am I being unfair? -
Citeon c3 - Deisel leak please help 3 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I do know it's spilling from the top of the tank So I haven't damaged it while driving. The really confusing thing is that the fuel gage hasn't changed and it's apparently still full even after filling 2 buckets up with diesel. Does anyone know why this has happened and what could be wrong. Is it possible to over fill even after I stopped fuelling at the first click of the pump. -
why must we always have to pay? 1 Jul 2011 (Forum)
The other day while queing at the Dartford Crossing to literally throw money at them, I wondered a few things. Is the toll money worth it, for several reasons? Firstly does it cost more in fuel and wasted time to stop traffic to collect it? Secondly, does the money collected cover the actual cost of running the crossing? My feeling is that this government could give us all a real feel good factor if they simply abolished these tolls. -
Any - Highest ever petrol prices 29 Jun 2011 (Forum)
I cruise along at 65 and very often find myself catching up the speed merchants later on queuing or stuck behind lorries etc. I get pretty decent fuel economy too. Why not save a few quid and slow down a bit. Start your journey earlier etc. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 TDCi Glow lamp indicator has come on. 29 Mar 2011 (Forum)
After 70,000 miles of trouble free driving I was motoring back from the airport last night and shortly after filling the fuel tank was driving along when the engine cut out and the Glow lamp indicator started flashing. Pulled over onto shoulder turned the ignition off then on and it restarted. It did this twice more somewhere around the 80 mph mark but stopped doing it when I cut the speed back to 70 mph and kept it in 5th.
