Zero to 60mph of the five-speed manual version is quoted at 15.2 seconds, top speed 104mph, combined fuel consumption 34.4mpg and C02 output 217g/km.

    Motorists in the West Midlands and Wales appear to be the most environmentally aware at 9% each, with those in East Anglia and East Midlands the least environmentally aware at 1% each. Why choose Diesel? When asked why diesel was chosen, better fuel consumption was the overwhelming reason given at 70%. However, there was a marked Increase in those motorists who had bought diesel saying that environmental considerations had been an influence. 17% of respondents to the 2007 survey said the environment was a factor compared to just 2% in 2006.

    The reduced size and weight improve economy, with the most frugal diesel officially capable of more than 90mpg. The most popular engine is expected to be the 1.6-litre CDTi, which Vauxhall calls the “whisper diesel.” This will be available in 110PS, 136PS and 160PS outputs, plus there is a 145PS 1.4-litre turbo petrol and, in entry-level models, Vauxhall’s impressive 1.0-litre tubrocharged petrol with 105PS.

    Drivers will be able to choose from rear- and four-wheel drive versions, petrol or diesel engines, plus manual or automatic gearboxes.     Alfa Romeo has announced that it is now importing 156s with its new 165bhp 2.0 litre JTS direct injection petrol engine. The 2.4 litre 156 JTD direct injection diesel gets a power hike to 150bhp. And first imports of the blisteringly fast 250bhp 3.2 litre GTA are now arriving. JTS stands for Jet Thrust Stoichiometric. Alfa has abandoned twin spark plugs in favour of directly injecting the fuel air mixture to the combustion chamber, running at lean burn to 1,500rpm and a stoichiometric 14.7:1 air:fuel mixture thereafter.

    Volvo has said buyers who do decide to opt for one of the new vehicles will find they are all cheap cars to run, describing the fuel economy as "outstanding". The C30 offers 64.2 miles per gallon (mpg), the S40 62.8 mpg and the V50 62.8 mpg. The DRIVe vehicles are due to be unveiled later this weekend at the Paris Motor Show which runs from the 4th to the 19th of the month.

    It can hit 149 mph at top speed and also get to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds from standstill, but it does so while in possession the cleanest diesel engine in the world, according to the firm. The vehicle also contains a built-in efficiency process which allows the car to reduce fuel consumption by nearly 20 per cent. "Combining the sun worshipping potential of a classic cabriolet with the mountain-scaling agility of a quattro-equipped 'off-roader', the Cross Cabriolet quattro could form the basis of a future SUV model from Audi," commented the firm.
