Audi Breaks Diesel Speed Records

Tue, 14 Aug 2001
Audi A2, A4 & A8 TDI models have established 50 speed records at the UK's two mile Millbrook bowl test track and at Bruntingthorpe.

Experienced speed record drivers Angus Hamilton and Tony Goodwin shared the three Audis which qualified in the 1100-1500cc (A2), 1500-2000cc (A4) and 3000-5000cc (A8) diesel classes with a total of 11 International and 39 British records being achieved. While the A2 and A4 TDI models are both currently available, the 3.3-litre A8 will not appear on UK roads until the new generation Audi A8 arrives in Britain in 2003.

Record highlights include the A2, A4 and A8 setting average speeds of 109.21mph, 128.94mph and 149.72mph respectively over a 5km flying start. The frugal A2 managed 30.79mpg during its speed record attempts while the A4 averaged 19.35mpg on its 200 mile run when it averaged 127.85mph. The A8 averaged over 12mpg during its high-speed runs.

"Audi has proven beyond doubt that its has the most advanced range of diesel engines in the world, which combine not only record breaking pace, but also high fuel efficiency, and crucially for company British motorists, among the lowest CO2 emissions of any manufacturer," commented Kevin Rose, Audi UK Director.

Audi is the only car manufacturer to use three Diesel induction technologies: Pump-injector system for the three and four cylinder units, radial-piston injection pump for the V6 engines, and common rail for the V8. The success of Audi diesel innovations is reflected in its production figures.

The two millionth diesel-powered Audi rolled off the production line at the Neckarsulm plant four months ago, 23 years after the very first example turned a wheel. Last year, more than 260,000 vehicles were equipped with a diesel engine, approximately 40 percent of the overall production at Audi. This figure has increased to approximately 44 per cent in the first three months of this year. Every second Audi registered in Western Europe and Germany in 2000 was equipped with a TDI engine.
