Backroom victory 30 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My Audi Coupe is now back on its wheels after some confusion over brake hoses (20V owners note - the German & Swedish parts catalogue lists the wrong front brake hose). The effect of fitting the new wishbone bushes is amazing - I hadn't realised just how bad the old ones had got. -
How (not) to use a gearbox to slow 3 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Unfortunately it has some disadvantages, namely: 1. Unless you have a 4WD, it means you are effectively braking (via engine compression) with the two driven wheels only. (The foot-brake works on all four wheels.) 2. Changing down through the gears to lose speed can cause unnecessary mechanical wear on a number of engine and transmission components. 3. -
2005 Dacia Logan - Problems after replacing brake discs 20 May 2021 (Forum)
I'm almost sorry I changed the brakes, the old ones were worn out but did not have this problem. Has anyone else experienced something similar? -
Audi A3 quattro - Loss of grip 23 Jan 2015 (Forum)
The momentum gained, and in an effort to slow the engine down I applied light braking with still no throttle and the clutch still out. I applied a little more braking and thankfully came to a stop after going into a bank of soft snow. The road have levelled out and we continued our journey after checking that there was no damage. -

ford mondeo mk2 1800 - mondeo idle/emissions & brake pedal travel problem 22 Mar 2011 (Forum)
hi, my wife's mondeo has just failed it mot on two things; 1) brake pedal travel too far - the brakes work fine, but the travel is a bit further than it should be, on the first mot this was only and advisory, but on the re-test i got a different chap who refused to re-test it saying it was dangerous...... -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 2.0 Long brake pedal travel 23 Jun 2009 (Forum)
8v Estate disc front, drum rear, 89000miles, handbrake 4 clicks to fully on. I've had this problem for a while now, the brakes work but you have to push the pedal a long way down before anything happens! Stamping on the pedal in an emergency it stops as it should & inline but if you're just wanting to slow up a bit your foot goes down, down, down, down.... ahh, she's slowing now... -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 99 1.8 Zetec - Warping brake disks 13 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I'd like some advice on brake disks for my mondy. The Ford original disks are pricey enough and only seem to last about 15-20K before they warp. I have recently started buying cheap ones from the local motor factor, for about £15 per disk. -

Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 03 Worn brake discs & drums - service limitations? 21 Dec 2007 (Forum)
How much life is left in the discs and drums? I don't drive on the brakes or heavy and the vehicle never tows anything. I am looking at a parts & labour bill in excess of £300 on a car I have had less than 31 days... -
VW Golf S80 - MOT and dangerous defect advice please 13 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I would of preferred a less inflated price without the guarantee. Overall I feel the putting a dangerous defect on a brake pad is over the top. This was on the right rear brake pad at 1.5 mm. I had 3 other brake pads that were not at a dangerous level. I didn’t have any problem with the car braking. I was in shock and thought I had no choice but to get the work done at the centre. -
Honda CR-V - Advice needed regarding underbody rust treatment 26 Sep 2024 (Forum)
I would like make sure what elements should I mask on to avoid any problems with future MOT test caused by applied black stuff to the elements which shouldn’t be covered. I already masked brakes pipes, ABS sensor cables, calipers, brake discs, fuel pipes, exhaust. Can I apply the stuff to these elements: - all steel suspension elements - steel support brackets like from gas tank, hoses and pipes brackets - front and rear sub-frames - brake dust shields (from external side) - all nuts, hose brackets, Should I be very careful with specific elements and don’t cover them with anything. -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 2001 1.8 - Brake caliper 21 Feb 2018 (Forum)
I changed the rear pads 9months ago and had some trouble pushing back the pistons with the proper tool. All seemed ok till this week when the brake and wheel overheated due to the pads catching. The following days it was back to normal with no heat. I've stripped it 4 times today and pushed back the pistons which are nice and free with the proper tool. -
brake pad material 20 May 2016 (Forum)
In fact just the other day I heard of a chap I know who's recently got a 2015 M5. Subsequentlly, just out of idle curiosity, he'd been looking at the prices for replacement brake pads. For a set of pads for the front axle (just the pads, no fitting), it appeared it would cost £500 even for ones sourced from eeebaigh. Just what, exactly, are those pads made out of, that makes them cost that much? -
Vauxhall Corsa SXI 1.4 07 - Uneven brake pressure 29 Mar 2016 (Forum)
The car didn't show any obvious problems when being driven prior to the service. I was told that there was uneven pressure being applied through the brakes and that it had failed the MOT because of this. They checked the friction of the various components in the system - this didn't solve the problem. They have now replaced the master cylinder which still hasn't fully solved the issue and they are now considering other options (valves and modulators have been mentioned). -
Any - Additional stop/tail/number plate light 6 Oct 2014 (Forum)
Unit has 3 wires connected, stop(Red). tail/numberplate(Yellow). and earth(Black). To me it seems that if a resistance to earth is seen through the brake light filament then the tail light is extinguished. As tail light is extinguished even if brake is not applied. Strange that i have had 3 lights all display the same symptom. All have been LED lights. -
BMW 320D SE - BMW As & When Servicing 2 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I bought this car new in March 2007 and the service interval was 20,000 miles or two years. Two faultless years followed, then a service, a year later new rear brake pads and an MOT. I then got a dashboard !! Sign saying service required at 36K. I took it in and it needed an oil change and fluids check. Fine. The bill? £357! Next up, according to the all-telling key fob, is a brake fluid change after another 1,600 miles. -
Vauxhall Cavalier CDX 1995 2.0 - Long handbrake travel 25 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I have to pull handle right up and think it's probably near maximum travel. Checked rear brakes & pads are ok. The spring lever on the rear brakes connected to the cable, seems at maximum travel, nearly hitting the surround end stop (see photos). 1) How easy is it to adjust ?? -
BMW 5-Series E60 (2003 - 2009) - 06 2.0 Is my handbrake stuck on? 16 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I have to accelerate harder and the car is lacking power. I thought the brakes might be stuck on but they weren't glowing red hot when I parked, they were hot but I had just been coming up the motorway. I just went out to the car park and tested the hand brake and noticed that when the car is rolling forward I do need to pull the lever quite a long way before it stops (suggesting it might be half on-ish already). -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 02 1.6 Overheating of front left brake disc 7 Oct 2009 (Forum)
When driving my Zafira it slowly came to a halt with smoke coming from the front left wheel. The wheel rim was too hot to touch. A mechanic collected car next day and replaced brake caliper, hose, disc and pads. It seemed fine but two days later my wife was driving home a short distance and the same problem occured. I contacted the mechanic and he told me to leave it for an hour and try to move car then.
