    The Clio will be powered by a choice of seven units (five petrol, two diesel), including Renault's new 67.3mpg 1.5dCi common rail diesel.   • New cut price Suzuki 4x4 for Spring 26 Jan 2001 (News)
    The cars have power steering, twin airbags, electric windows, central locking, radio/cassette player, immobiliser, halogen headlamps, hard spare wheel cover and a high mounted central rear brake light. The engine is an all alloy 1.6 single cam unit putting out 92.5bhp and 102 lb ft torque at 4,000rpm. The driver can switch from two to four wheel drive at speeds of up to 62mph (100kph). Both soft top and hard top models are priced at £12,495 which includes a three year warranty.

      This was not quite reflected in TUV’s separate wet braking tests where, taking the wet braking performance of the Michelins at 100%, the Contis scored 95% and the Bridgestones 93%.   Yet in the TUV testing of 205/55 winter tyres, taking Michelin Alpin 4 as the control tyre at 100%, the Michelins were slightly outperformed by Conti Wintercontact TS830, at 101%; Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D at 102% at 102% and Goodyear Ultragrip 7+ at 103%.

    Failure rates for steering are 88% higher in Kirkcaldy than in the average UK town and failure rates for brakes 95% higher than average. Suspension and lighting failure rates are also higher. The cause for these poor results is probably the climate and terrain. Kikcaldy is next to the North Sea and so the harsh sea air can cause problems, as do rougher roads and the higher mileages owners need to cover to get around a more rural area.

    Some of the suggestions the group gave for changing motoring habits included removing unneeded items from a car to minimise weight and avoiding sudden or harsh acceleration and braking. The ETA was established in 1990 and aims to raise awareness about the over-use of cars. It also tries to help people make positive alterations to their methods of transport.     Toyota's new model 'is a safe choice' 2 Dec 2008 (News)
    Commenting on the iQ, Toyota said it offered "an unprecedented level of active and passive safety protection" for a car of its size. The manufacturer claimed handling and braking features - including Steering Assist Stability Control and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution - could help motorists avoid being involved in an accident. However, it pointed out - should the worst happen - the car is equipped with nine airbags positioned throughout the interior to provide 360-degree protection to the occupants.

    It added that 25 per cent of motorists have been involved in crashes as a result of unruly children and ten per cent say that screaming and fighting in the back seat is a regular occurrence. Brake head of education Jools Townsend comments that people need to try and keep kids under control while on the road. "It is essential that drivers ensure children are securely strapped in before setting off and that they have something to keep them occupied," the official told Crash.net.
  • Alternative fuel systems revealed at Detroit show 14 Jan 2008 (News)
    Among them is the Bluetec diesel engine, found in the Jeep Renegade concept, which provides fuel economy almost five times as large of a petrol-only model. Similarly, the ecoVoyager saves energy through a technique called regenerative braking, which allows for it to transfer energy to the engine when the vehicle slows down. And the all-electric Dodge Zero Emissions Operation (ZEO) is "as expressive as any petrol-powered vehicle ... and then some".
  • Mercedes rolls out C 63 AMG Estate 7 Sep 2007 (News)
    Mercedes has commented that the model will also benefit from "optimum stopping power" because of its internally-ventilated and perforated disc brakes - a specification typical of the car. "The design and appointments on the new C 63 AMG Estate are comfortably on a par with the sophisticated technology," the firm said. The first C-Class models were introduced in 1993 to replace the 190 range.
  • Bugs cost motorists £44m in damage 24 Aug 2007 (News)
    Beaten to the top spot by strong sunlight, 75 per cent of drivers claimed to be distracted by bugs while driving, with four per cent admitting to reacting by slamming on the brakes and 22 per cent claiming they take their hands off the wheel. Esure's risk and underwriting head Mike Pickard said: "With an influx of insects expected to hit the UK, it's worrying that over three quarters of the driving population are so easily distracted by bugs when they're behind the wheel.
  • Peugeot to recall 307-model 23 Aug 2007 (News)
    The announcement comes after a defect was found in the waterproofing of 307 hatchbacks built between 2003 and 2006, which could potentially cause short-circuiting in the antilock brake and electronic stability systems. Martine Faucon, spokesperson for the automaker, said: "It's a pre-emptive measure. There are no short-term problems with the car." This will be the third short-circuit related recall of the 307-model - awarded the title of 2002 European Car of the Year - in three years.

    133PS is developed at 3,600rpm and 304Nm (224lb ft) torque is developed at 2,000rpm. As well as being useful for caravan and trailer towing this has raised the maximum braked trailer weight to 3,000kg. Performance, fuel consumption and CO2 figures aren’t given, but prices start at £12,600 + VAT for the basic single cab 4x4 pick-up, rising through £12,850 + VAT for the King Cab and £14,450 + VAT for the Double Cab to £16,100 + VAT for the Navara Double Cab in the photo.
  • Rare 1969 Jensen FF in Historics 23rd November auction 17 Nov 2019 (News)
    One of only 193 built, the Jensen FF came with two important innovations: Ferguson Formula four-wheel drive and Dunlop Maxaret anti-lock brakes. Powered by a 6,276cc Chrysler hemi V8 engine with power fed through a Torqueflite automatic transmission it had a top speed of 140mph and could get to 100 in 19 seconds. The body, with distinctive glasshouse rear window, is by Touring of Milan.
  • Jaguar reveals electric E-type 7 Sep 2017 (News)
    Using an electric powertrain with similar weight and dimensions to the outgoing petrol engine and transmission means the car’s structure, including suspension and brakes, has not changed, simplifying the conversion and homologation. It drives, handles, rides and brakes like an original E-type. Front-rear weight distribution is unchanged. The XK six-cylinder engine was made from 1949 until 1992, and was fitted to nearly all iconic Jaguar models of that period, including the E-type, XK120, Mk2 and XJ6.
  • Four in ten drivers admit to speeding in 20mph zones 6 Sep 2016 (News)
    Four in ten drivers said they sometimes break the limit by at least 10mph in zones that are designed to keep pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly, safe. The findings come from a new survey carried out by Brake - the road safety charity - and insurance firm Direct Line. The statistics make for concerning reading in the week when most children are going back to, or starting school, for the new term.

    Looked after by marque specialists Skip Brown Cars, we’re told it has a fully re-bushed Bilstein suspension and M16 front brake callipers. The guide price? £12k-£15k. These cars were much loved by rally enthusiasts at the time, but although it's been tastefully modified, there's no mention of whether or not this one has seen action.
