VIDEO: Fiat 124 Spider - size does matter

Published 05 October 2017

It's no secret that the Fiat 124 is based on the Mazda MX-5 - a modern classic if ever there was one. The problem is, Mark is in no fit state to appreciate the Fiat's particular charms.

My wife and I are in our 60s and find the Spider extremely comfortable but neither of us are over 5'8". As for driving its a dream. In terms of handing and poise I love the fact on any twisting road or roundabout it leaves front wheel hot hatches trailing in its wake as you watch young enthusiastic boy racers wander all over the road as they disappear in my rear view mirror.

The car isn't ridiculous...the tester's bias's are. If you are the "right" size....don't want to carry furniture/two weeks shopping etc and just want some great driving...this is the tool (or rather the Abarth version is...) Be happy in your samey hot hatch - whatever the marque - they all look similar, right?...I'm VERY happy with my choice....

As for you my geordie come up (occasionally) with some good stuff - just be conscious that people have different tastes and are different sizes..... That the Mazda MX5 is the most successful (in sales) small sports car of all time - (and this car's characteristics are very similar) - says a little something - don't you think?

Just one final thing - you are absolutely right....size DOES matter....The dimensions mean this little beauty can be hustled safely along narrow country roads with the loud pedal pressed hard - equally manouevarable in town - fantastic to park and squeeze through those tight gaps where a lot of modern oversized SUVs just have to stop and gawp....

At least you nailed one quality.....
