Infiniti reveals details of the new M saloon

Infiniti - the premium Japanese manufacturer - has confirmed details of its new M saloon, a luxury rival to the likes of the BMW 5-Series. It goes on sale now as the M37 - a 3.7-litre V6 powered model with 320bhp but what's likely to be more popular is the diesel M30d which is set to arrive in the UK in October 2010.

The new Infiniti M will join the Infiniti FX - the large 4x4, alongside the smaller Infiniti EX and the Infiniti G saloon. Prices for the M37 start at £35,150 and it comes very well equipped as standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission, xenon lights, electrically adjustable front seats, a reversing camera, plus Infiniti's new Drive Mode Selector which can be altered to either Sport, Normal, Snow or an Eco setting.

Power comes from the 3.7-litre petrol engine which is used across the Infiniti range as well as in the Nissan 370Z. This propels the M37 from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds while average fuel consumption is 27.7mpg with CO2 emissions of 235g/km. It's also said to be Infiniti's most technologically advanced car with a range of electronic driver aids known as Dynamic Safety Shield.

On top Premium models this includes a Blind Spot Intervention system, which not only registers nearby vehicles but also helps ensure the Infiniti cannot stray into their path. Other new features include Active Noise Control and Forest Air, a climate control system that creates gentle breezes and subtle scents in order to 'promote alertness and relieve stress.'

The M37 GT is priced from £37,650 and puts the emphasis on luxury with semi-aniline leather, heated and ventilated front seats and White Ash wood trim with a silver powder finish. The M37S (from £39,650) is the sporting choice, with 4-Wheel Active Steering (4WAS), sports suspension, sports seats (also heated and ventilated), gearshift paddles and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Premium versions of both the GT - priced from £43,000 - and the S, available from £45,000, come with every feature available, including the Dynamic Safety Shield package, Forest Air, a 16-speaker Bose sound system and Infiniti's Connectiviti+ information package which includes a 30GB HDD navigation system.

Premium versions also feature the Eco Pedal. If driving too aggressively, the driver will feel the accelerator pedal "push back" to indicate fuel is being wasted. There will be a hybrid version, badged the M35h, which goes on sale in Spring 2011, promising strong performance but low CO2 emissions.

There's currently only one Infiniti showroom in the UK, based at Reading, but three new Infiniti Centres, designed to reflect the contemporary style and luxury of a bespoke hotel rather than a car dealership, are due to open in Central London, Birmingham and Glasgow before the end of the year.
