SEAT's most powerful car yet hits British showrooms

SEAT's most powerful car ever goes on sale early next week, reviving the R badge that was last seen on the Leon back in 2006.

The 265bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged Leon Cupra R boasts performance figures that are as stunning as its looks. As well as being the most powerful SEAT ever, it's also the quickest and fastest, with 0-62mph arriving in just 6.2 second and onto a top 'where permitted' speed of 155mph.

Torque is impressive, too with a peak of 350 Nm at just 2,500 rpm is a full 50 Nm more than the standard Leon Cupra, and puts the Leon ahead of the likes of the Honda Civic Type R GT (193 Nm); Lotus Exige 1.8 S Performance (230 Nm) and even the Alfa Romeo Brera 3.2 JTS V6 (322 Nm).

A comparatively priced BMW 120i M Sport Coupe, meanwhile, can muster just 210 Nm of pulling power.

The Leon R uses a modified version of the existing 2.0-litre, four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine in the Leon Cupra. It's been re-engineered at SEAT's Martorell technical centre, with modifications to the electronic management system and a boost for the maximum turbo pressure to generate the Cupra R's extra power and torque.

Other changes include a revised high pressure fuel injection pump and reworked ratios within the Leon's six-speed manual gearbox.

Emissions from the SEAT's EU5-compliant engine are 190 g/km and it has a Combined fuel consumption figure of 35mpg. Both figures are impressive for a hatch with this level of performance.

Styling changes over the standard Cupra R include the addition of sporty twin central exit exhaust pipes within a customised rear diffuser, discreet extended high level rear spoiler, subtle ‘R' badging and the careful application of gloss black highlighting inside and out.

All cars have 19-inch Potenza alloys, prominent ‘R' badging on the back of the quilted leather bucket-style front sports seats and a specially created SEAT Sport engine cover.

UK pricing for the new Leon Cupra R is £25,205.
