Volkswagen wins top security award

Four class wins have proved to be enough for Volkswagen to lift the overall honours in the British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards (BIVSA).

Among the four category winners for VW, the Polo SEL scooped the City Car and Supermini prize, while the Tiguan lifted the trophy for Crossover models. Further silverware came VW's way with the Phaeton winning the Luxury class and the Caravelle seeing off the competition as best Large MPV.

This is the first time Volkswagen has won the BIVSA overall, with Volvo and Audi the only other companies to have lifted the title in the award's seven year history.

The BIVSA are supported by the Home Office, Department for Transport, What Car? and the AA. Cars are judged on a number of criteria identified by the New Vehicle Security Ratings scheme and only those with a maximum five-star rating for 'theft from', double locking and an 'E' insurance suffix to denote they had exceeded the required standard made it through to the final judging.

Volkswagen's Rod McLeod said: "It's a tremendous achievement for the Volkswagen range to be ranked as the best. To win the overall award is proof that security and safety features should not be the preserve of an elite few. We aim to extend the technology available on the flagship Phaeton right down to volume models such as the Polo."

The awards are presented by Thatcham, the Motor Industry Repair Research Centre and Thatcham's Mike Briggs said: "It's great to see Volkswagen as a new winner. This success clearly demonstrates how vehicle manufacturers are continuing to raise their game to reduce the risk of vehicle crime to insurers and the motoring public."
