MoT failure rates and causes published by VOSA

Wed, 13 Jan 2010

The BBC has succeeded in its long-running battle for MoT failure rates to be published.

It means for the first time that owners and prospective buyers will have detailed access to MoT records and reasons for failure.

The figures show that the 2002-2009 Renault Megane fails a higher percentage of MoTs than any other car (28% failure rate) with the 2003-2006 Vauxhall Corsa in second with 24.7 per cent, the 2000-2005 Ford Mondeo in third with 21.8 per cent, the 2001-2010 Renault Clio in fourth with 21.2 per cent and the 1996-2009 Ford Ka in fifth with 21 per cent. The Toyota Corolla had the lowest failure rate – just 11.2 per cent. Hondas and Toyotas perform well, as do VW Polos and Ford Fiestas.

Previously the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) had refused to make the information available to the public, citing that it was commercially sensitive and could also be misleasing. Following an appeal to the Information Commissioner by the BBC, VOSA released the figures.

While it only shows data for MoT tests carried out in 2007, VOSA has said that it will publish details for cars tested in 2008 and 2009 later this year.

Several manufacturers have complained that the figures are misleading, especially those that supply a large number of cars to fleets. Vauxhall told the BBC: “Many of the failed items highlighted in this report, such as brakes, driver's view of the road, registration plates and tyres, are directly attributable to vehicles that have covered above average mileages. Since Vauxhall was one of the largest suppliers of fleet vehicles during the period surveyed (2004-2007), and fleet vehicles typically cover higher mileages than most, it comes as no surprise that some of our cars appear in this list.”
