AMG Exhibition at Mercedes Benz World

Thu, 26 Mar 2009

AMG enthusiasts will be flooding to Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey throughout 2009 to indulge their passion for the high-performance brand with a new attraction.

The free, interactive exhibition will allow visitors to get up close and personal with a selection of the premium performance cars in the AMG Themefield, with talks on the brand’s 40 year history and heritage at 11.30am and 2.30pm on weekends and during school holidays.

A brief history of AMG

The company was founded on 1 June 1967 as a specialist motorsport and tuning firm, by Hans Werner Aufrecht (A) and his partner Erhard Melcher (M). The third letter in the company name (G) came from Aufrecht’s birthplace, Grossaspach.

In the early years of the company, its founders concentrated on building racing cars based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE and competing in European touring car races. In 1971 a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG finished second at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium, winning its class at the same time. This historic victory was followed by countless successes at all manner of motorsport arenas, and later AMG took the DTM team title five times.

Decades of experience in touring car and GT racing played a key role in the development of two special AMG vehicles which are now at the heart of Formula 1™. The Official F1™ Safety Car is based on the SL 63 AMG, whilst the C 63 AMG Estate provides the basis for the Official F1™ Medical Car.

However AMG’s success has spread far beyond the world of international motorsport, transferring technology from the race circuit to the road.

In the 1970s AMG pioneered the refinement and tuning of premium vehicles and became the first Mercedes-Benz tuning company. In 1990 the brand signed a cooperation agreement with Daimler-Benz AG and the Patent Office recognized AMG as a trademark. In 1999 AMG was incorporated into the DaimlerChrysler Group.

Today, AMG is renowned for its ‘One man, One engine’ manufacturing process, where one technician is responsible for the assembly of an individual engine. Now those three letters have become synonymous with performance, individuality, dynamism and exclusivity.

Peter O’Halloran, managing director at Mercedes-Benz World, commented: “This new exhibition will guide visitors through key points in the history of AMG: from its humble beginnings; to its milestone achievements in motorsport; outstanding technological achievements; and right through to the development of the latest AMG, the awe-inspiring Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series.

“The daily talks will offer a unique insight into the inner workings of this high-performance, high-energy Mercedes-Benz brand. And of course, visitors can enjoy the ultimate AMG experience by booking a driving experience and getting behind the wheel of one of our performance vehicles on the Handling Circuits here at Mercedes-Benz World.”
