City car and Urban Warrior from Rover

Wed, 09 Jul 2003
Rover has launched a pair of new small cars to go on sale soon.

The CityRover is a re-worked Tata Indica, imported from India to an improved Rover spec. Size is 3,702mm long x 1,620mm wide x 1,467mm high. It has quite a big 85PS 1.4 litre engine giving 0-60 in 11.5 seconds and top speed of 110mph and will list from £6,500 to £8,500. Spec levels are to be called Solo, Sprite, Select and Style.

All have drivers airbag, front seatbelt pretensioners, four speaker radio/cassette (who used cassettes these days?), clock, lockable Glovebox, variable intermittent wipers, rear wash/wipe, tinted glass with shadeboard, cigar lighter, load space lamp, courtesy lamp delay, 4-speed heating/ventilation fan with recirculation setting, alloy gearknob and remote tailgate and fuel filler releases.

In addition, the Sprite gets power steering, remote central locking, tachometer, radio/CD player, alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and gearknob, front foglamps and rear spoiler. The Select gets front and rear electric windows and air-conditioning. The Style gets ABS and a passenger airbag.

Wheels are 5J x 14 with 175/60R14 tyres. A jack-knife folding 60/40 split rear seat allows luggage capacities from 220 litres to 610 litres.

In contrast, and acknowledging the state of real UK city streets, Rover has also launched a jacked up derivative of the 25 called the Streetwise. 15” steel or 16” alloy wheels with fairly deep profile tyres allow it to ride pot-holes and traffic harming measures, while a tough looking bodykit with roof bars helps it look the part.

Engines are 84PS and 1.3PS 1.4 K Series petrol or the 101PS 2.0 litre turbodiesel all with 5 speed manual boxes. A 1.8 Stepspeed CVT will come later.

The Streetwise can be ordered as a 5-seater with five lap/diagonal belts, or as a 4-seater. First deliveries should be at the end of August.
