New SAAB 9-3 Details, Specs and Prices

Tue, 21 May 2002
More details and specs of the new SAAB 9-3 saloon, which arrives in the UK in September, have been released by the manufacturer.

The car is virtually all new. It sits on the Epsilon floorpan developed jointly by SAAB and GM for the new 9-3 and the new Vectra, but differs in several important details: the new SAAB 9-3 structure is more than twice as torsionally stiff as the old Cavalier based car. The suspension is MacPherson strut at the front and multi-link independent at the rear, mounted on subframes by rubber bushes which are laterally stiff for good steering response but longitudinally compliant for good ride comfort and isolation of road noise from the cabin. For the first time on a SAAB, the rear provides passive rear wheel steer to reduce understeer and sharpen steering response.

ABS, EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), ESP (electronic stability programme), CBC (cornering brake control) and TCS (traction control system) are all standard kit.

The new petrol engines are all lightweight aluminium turbocharged 2.0 litre jobs, but badged 1.8t, 2.0t and 2.0T to differentiate their SAAB Trionic 8 managed power outputs. The transmissions are also new: 5-speed manual for the 1.8t and 2.0t; 6-speed manual for the 2.0T and 5-speed automatic for all three. The auto is available with an optional ‘Sentronic’ steering wheel paddle shift. The 2.2 diesel and 5-speed manual box carries over.

Communications systems are Bluetooth enabled so mobile phones, PDAs and notebook computers need no physical connection to the integrated car system. SAAB’s own satnav system is optional or pre-fitted according to spec level.

Specs are: ‘Linear’, which sits on 15” alloys and has fabric upholstery with anthracite trim; ‘Arc’, which comes on 16” alloys with leather upholstery and polar wood trim; ‘Vector’, which has 17” alloys and sports leather/textile upholstery with matt chrome trim; and the flagship ‘Aero’ with lowered sports suspension and 210bhp turbo engine only.

Safety features include improved SAAB Active Head restraints, load limiting seatbelts, dual stage front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags.

The new 9-3 Linear range begins at £18,495 for 1.8t and 2.2 TiD models, with the 175 bhp, 2.0t engine costing £1,100 more (as it does for the Arc and Vector Forms).

The new 9-3 Arc is priced from £20,295 (£1,800 above the Linear Form), and adds leather seat and door trim, poplar-wood facia panels, full automatic climate control, 16" alloy wheels, front fog lamps, etc.

The new 9-3 Vector costs from £20,495 (£2,000 more than the Linear, and £200 over the Arc) and includes sports seats, 17" alloy wheels, and much more.

The new 9-3 Aero is just £22,895 on the road, with a high standard specification, including 6-speed manual transmission, ESP, sports chassis and bi-xenon headlamps.
