Classic Sale of the Century in Monaco

Sun, 05 May 2002
The most exciting European Classic Car Auction of the 21st Century takes place at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco on 17th May 2002, to be held by Coys Europe in association with Barrett-Jackson of Scottsdale, Arizona.

Three 1930s Alfa Romeos in the sale are one of the two 1933 8C 2300 lungos built: chassis 2111024, originally owned by Luigi Chinetti; a very original 1933 6C 1750, chassis 8513081, with Grand Sport Spyder bodywork by Zagato; and a 1939 6C2500S once owned by Count Trossi.

Ferraris are represented by a 1951 212 Inter by Vignale on chassis no 0179EL, originally delivered to Franco Cornacchia of Scuderia Guastalla; an impressive fake 250GT SWB built from a 1962 GTE and conservatively estimated at 145,000 to 175,000 Euros; an ex NART 1980 BBLM, chassis no. 33647; a beautiful 1964 275 GTS Spyder; a 1967 330 GTC; a unique 1974 330 Zagato; a 1980 400i convertible by Pavesi; a 1986 288 GTO; a 1995 512M; a 1997 355 Spyder; and a modern 200mph 1998 550 Maranello which could come cheap at 85,000 to 105,000 Euros.

Star of the sale has to be a fabulous 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante, chassis no. 57641 with roll-back roof. Two other Bugattis on offer are a very original looking 1927 Type 37 four cylinder car, chassis no. 37246; and a 1951 Type 101 Supercharged with drophead coupe bodywork by Gangloff on chassis no. 101501, documented to have been the show car and factory demonstrator.

Aston Martins include a 1937 2.0 litre short chassis (no G8/854/SC); and a well known 1955 DB3S (chassis DB3S/103). Abarths are represented by a 1955 207-A Spider Corsa Boano and a 1967 SEO 4L Sport Biposto. Maseratis include the ugly but unique 1947 A6 Pininfarina prototype, chassis 053; there’s a really pretty 1951 Siata Grand Sport Barchetta; an unrestored 1950 Cisitalia 202 cabriolet; a 1952 Talbot Lago T26 Barchetta; a 1937 Delahaye 135 Competition; a 1921 Hispano Suiza H6B with unique Tourer body by Flood of Melbourne on chassis 10420; a 1914 Rolls Royce 40/50 with extraordinary toast-rack bodywork; and an awesome yet beautiful 8.7 litre 750bhp 1983 Bizzarini LM Can Am Spider Corsa.

The sale starts at 5.00pm (17.00) on Friday 17th May, with Autombibilia from 4.30 (16.30); viewing on Thursday 16th May from 12.00 noon to 8.00pm (20.00) and on the sale day from 10.00 to 5.00pm (17.00).
