New KIA Shuma II, from just £8,995

Mon, 25 Feb 2002
KIA has relaunched its Shuma 5-door hatchback as the new look Shuma II with a new interior and with prices from just £8,995 (the same as Citroen's current price for the Xsara 1.4LX with a/c). The size of the cars is similar to that of the Mitsubishi Carisma, Skoda Octavia and old Vauxhall Vectra, so it's longer than a Focus, but smaller than a Mondeo.

£8,995 buys the 1.6L, which has the sweeter of the two engines on offer. Its 1,594cc twin-cam four puts out 75kw (100bhp) at 5,500rpm and 144Nm (106 lb ft) torque at 4,500rpm. With a kerb weight of 1,189kg, this is adequate, pulling the car to 60mph in 11.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 115mph. Combined economy is 35.3 mpg and CO2 emissions 190g/km (£160pa VED).

The slightly more gruff 1,793cc 1.8LX delivers 84kw (113bhp) at 5,600rpm and 157Nm (116 lb ft) torque at 4,500rpm. Weighing only slightly more at 1,206kg, it gets to 60mph in a respectable 9.7 seconds and goes on to 126mph. Combined economy is 31.4 mpg and CO2 emissions 214g/km (£160pa VED).

Handling and roadholding isn’t up to class standards, but that won't bother most buyers who simply want a smart family hatchback that doesn’t look too mainstream for very sensible money.

The specification of the £8,995 1.6L includes twin de-powered airbags, ABS with EBD, front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters, electric windows front and rear, electric door mirrors, cabin dust filter, remote central locking, 60:40 split folding rear seat, height-adjustable steering wheel, height and lumbar adjustable driver's seat.

The 1.8LX at £10,350 has the additions of air-conditioning, body colour rear boot spoiler, leather steering wheel and gearknob, metallic grain centre fascia and instrument panel and parking distance sensors. This is also available with a four speed automatic transmission at £11,100. Performance figures of the auto are 0-60 in 12.0 seconds, top speed 119 mph, combined mpg 28.8, CO2/km 232 (£160 VED).

Top model is the £11,850 1.8SE which also has leather seat facings, front fog lamps, 14 inch alloy wheels (with alloy spare) and a single CD player.

All come with KIA's three year unlimited mileage warranty with three year's pan European roadside assistance and a six year no perforation body warranty.

One disadvantage is only two lap/diagonal rear belts with just a lap strap in the centre.
