New Polo Prices £7,995 to £13,995

Mon, 28 Jan 2002
VW has today announced UK prices for its new Polo, which goes on sale on 8th February. But, because you won't be able to buy the 55bhp models until "mid 2002", prices effectively start at £8,820, for the 65bhp 3-door 1.2 'E'. For younger drivers, it may be worth waiting for the 55bhp E as it is expected to have the lowest available Group 1 insurance rating (the 65bhp 1.2 is already confirmed as Group 2 and the most powerful new Polo, the 100bhp TDI PD is Group 6).

Prices of all models include a 3 year 60,000 mile warranty, 3 year paint warranty, 12 year body protection warranty and VW Assistance.

Specification starts with:- ABS, illuminated ashtray, blue lit instruments, body coloured bumpers, luggage compartment carpet, centre console, cigarette lighter, driver and passenger airbags, internally adjustable door mirrors, electronic immobiliser, front and rear head restraints, front seat side impact airbags, 4-speed plus intermittent front wipers, full size spare wheel, fully electro galvanized body, halogen headlights, 4-speed heating and ventilation fan, height and reach adjustable steering wheel, Isofix fittings for two rear child seats, load lip shield, lockable fuel cap, removable luggage cover, power steering, radio/cassette player, only two rear three point seat belts, rear wiper with intermittent setting, rev counter, tinted glass, lights on warning buzzer.

In addition, the 'S' model comes with: anti-hijack internal central locking button, central locking, front cup-holder, driver and passenger seat height adjustment, driver and passenger underseat drawers, front electric windows, electric door mirrors.
('S' A/C models also have air-conditioning).

As well as that, the SE has: body coloured door handles and mirrors, illuminated vanity mirrors, upgraded 'Gamma' radio/cassette player, remote central locking and alarm, split folding rear seat with armrest, centre sunvisor.

Extra and replacement items on the Sport include: four 6Jx15 alloy wheels with 195/50 R15 tyres, front foglights, heated screenwasher jets, front sports seats, multifunction computer, split folding rear seat without armrest, sports suspension.

The cheapest diesel in the line-up is the 64bhp, 132g/km SDI E at £9,415 for the 3-door and £9,915 for the 5-door. Cheapest TDI is the 75bhp, 124 g/km TDI PD 1.4 S at £11,055 for the 3-door and £11,555 for the 5-door.

To get close to Honda Jazz SE spec, you are asked to pay another £1,000 for the Polo 1.2SE 5-door at £11,285, but you will be well short on power at 65bhp, you will need to fork out an extra £75 for a three-point centre rear seatbelt, plus extra £460 for a sunroof (if you want one), and you'll still be missing the amazing versatility of the Jazz interior. A 75bhp Polo 1.4SE 5-door comes out at £11,695 and a 75bhp 1.4 TDI PD SE 5-door at £12,560. However, the 1.4 petrol is available with automatic transmission at £12,585.

A 100bhp Polo 1.4 Sport 5-door is £13,000, and a 100bhp Polo 1.9 TDI PD Sport 5-door is £13,995.

So the new Polo is outclassed on innovation, specification and price by the Honda Jazz. But it does come with an electro-galvanized bodyshell and it is built in Europe.
