New Corolla Offers Something For Everyone

Toyota's new Corolla goes UK sale on 2nd January 2002 and, befitting the world's best-selling car, includes three and five door hatchbacks, an estate, a mini MPV, a range of petrol and diesel engines from 89bhp to 189bhp and prices from ££10,795 to £16,495.

Bodies first, the five-door hatchback looks remarkably like a Skoda Fabia. Dimensions of the three and five-door hatches are 4,180mm long, 1,710mm wide, 1,475mm high and have a seats-up luggage capacity of 289 litres.

The estate is 4,385mm long, 1,710mm wide, 1,520mm high and has a seats-up luggage capacity of 402 litres or 975 litres with rear seats folded.

The Verso MPV is 4,240mm long, 1,705mm wide and 1,640mm high with a seats up luggage capacity of 417 litres or 973 litres with rear seats removed.

Engines next: there are four petrol engines and two diesels. All have five-speed manual gearboxes apart from the T-Sport which has a six-speeder. 1.6 and 1.8 are available with optional four-speed automatic transmissions; the diesels are only available in five-door bodies, and the high-output 109bhp diesel is only available in the five-door hatchback.

The 1.4 VVT-I offers 97bhp at 6,000rpm and 130Nm (96 lb ft) torque at 4,400rpm. 0-62 is quoted at 12.0 seconds, top speed 115mph, Euro combined mpg 42.1 and CO2 output 159g/km (VED band B: £120) for the three or five door body.

The 1.6 VVT-I has 110bhp at 6,000rpm and 150Nm (111 lb ft) torque at 4,800rpm. 0-62 is quoted at 10.2 seconds, top speed 118mph, Euro combined mpg 40.3 and CO2 output 168g/km (VED band C: £140) for the three or five door hatchbacks. The automatic gets to 62 in 11.8 seconds, reaches 109mph, does a combined 35.7mpg and emits 190g/km CO2 (VED band D: £155). The 1.6 Verso manual gets to 62 in 11.4 seconds, reaches 112mph, does a combined 38.7mpg and emits 172g/km CO2 (VED band C: £140).

The 1.8 VVT-I has 133bhp at 6,000rpm and 170Nm (125lb ft) torque at 4,200rpm. 0-62 is quoted at 10.3 seconds, top speed 115mph, Euro combined mpg 37.1 and CO2 output 181g/km (VED band D: £155) for the Verso body. The 1.8 Verso automatic gets to 62 in 11.4 seconds, reaches 109mph, does a combined 34.4mpg and emits 195g/km CO2 (VED band D: £155).

The high revving 1.8VVTL-I (T Sport) has 189bhp at 7,800rpm and 180Nm (133lb ft) torque at 6,800rpm. 0-62 is quoted at 8.4 seconds, top speed 140mph, Euro combined mpg 34.0 and CO2 output 198g/km (VED band D: £155).

The 2.0-litre D-4D has 89bhp at 4,000rpm and 215Nm (159lb ft) torque between 2,200 and 2,400rpm. 0-62 is quoted at 12.6 seconds, top speed 112mph, Euro combined mpg 47.8 and CO2 output 156g/km (Diesel VED band B: £130) for the three or five door hatchbacks. The 2.0 D-4D Verso gets to 662 in 13.5 seconds, reaches 115mph. Does a combined 45.5mpg and emits 164g/km CO2 (Diesel VED band B: £130).

The intercooled high-output 2.0 D-4D has 109bhp at 4,000rpm and 250Nm (184Nm) torque between 2,200 and 2,400rpm. 0-62 is quoted at 10.9 seconds, top speed 115mph, Euro combined mpg 48.7 and C02 output 154g/km (Diesel Band B: £130) for the three or five door hatchbacks.

All models feature electric power steering which is not dependent on an engine-driven pump; driver, passender and front side airbags; ABS with EBD; repair costs have been kept low resulting in low insurance groups starting at 3E for the 1.4 hatchback and rising to 14A for the T Sport; a useful optional extra is the City Collection consisting of parking sensors and bumper protectors (cost £286); Toyota\'s time-saving satellite navigation Traffic Avoidance System is also available.

The manufacturer warranty is three years or 60,000 miles, plus the industry standard 12 year no perforation body warranty.

The versatile Verso features rear seats which can be folded, tumbled slid up to 150mm or removed entirely and no less than 22 storage areas around the car.

Four door saloon versions will be available from Summer 2002.
