New Audi Cabrio Sold Out for 2002

Fri, 21 Dec 2001
Even though the new A4 Cabriolet is not due in the UK until next Spring, Audi has announced that the entire UK allocation for 2002 is already sold out.

Not surprising because the car looks gorgeous.

The original A4 missed out on losing its roof as the Audi 80 coupe-based cabrio fulfilled the role. However, the new cabrio is based on the classy new A4 and will come with a choice of 2.4 litre 170bhp or 3.0 litre 220 bhp 30 valve V6 engines.

Given the engines and generous equipment levels, prices of £24,620 for the 2.4 and £28,170 for the 3.0 Sport aren't too bad.

Standard kit includes 16-inch 5-arm Aero alloy wheels with 205/55 R16 tyres, remote central locking activating an alarm with interior microwave protection, electronic climate control, a leather 4-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a Concert stereo with single CD player. An automatic roll-over protection system adds to the extensive list of safety features already fitted to A4 saloon and Avant models.

Sport versions gain striking 17-inch 5-spoke star alloy wheels with 235/45 R17 tyres, sports suspension, a sports leather steering wheel and sports seats with electric lumbar support.

The car's four-link front and trapezoidal-link rear suspension, which has already won praise in the A4 saloon and Avant, has been both lowered and tuned specifically to give a more sporting bias. This sharper feel is emphasised strongly in the Sport models with their firmer damper settings. An exceptional increase in body rigidity of 112 per cent compared with the old 80 based Cabriolet also brings benefits both dynamically and in terms of safety.

Like the new Audi A4 saloon and Avant, whose DNA it shares, the Cabriolet is considerably more practical than its predecessor, offering genuine four seat capability and class leading luggage capacity thanks to a wheelbase which has been extended by 100mm.

Inside, the cabin is fronted by a striking new centre console design incorporating circular air vents with aluminium surrounds, which helps to distinguish the soft-top Audi from its saloon and Avant stablemates. An electro-hydraulically operated hood with a heated glass rear window is standard.
