Ford Focus Facelift and TDCi Engines

Fri, 07 Dec 2001
Ford has mildly improved the looks of its Focus model for 2002, but, more importantly, has finally put its long awaited TDCi diesel engines for the Focus and Mondeo on sale.

Engines first, the Focus gets a 1.8 litre version of the new chain-cam common rail TDCi developing 115PS (113.4bhp) and 184.4lb ft (250Nm) torque at 1,850rpm. This gives it a 0-60 of 10.5 seconds, a top speed of 120mph, a combined economy figure of 51.4mpg and a CO2 output of 145g/km. Prices start at £14,595 for the five door LX.

The Mondeo gets a 2.0 litre version of the new chain cam TDCi engine putting out 130PS (128.2bhp) and 243lb ft (330Nm) torque. Its 0-60 is 9.6 seconds, top speed 124mph, combined economy 47.9mpg and CO2 output 156g/km. Prices start at £16,145 for the four or five door LX, narrowly undercutting the VW Passat TDI PD 130S, so, with a new company car BIK tax base of £2,906 (£1,162pa for a 40% taxpayer) demand as a company car is likely to be huge.

Other improvements for the 2002 Focus include an optional Interior Versatility Pack which allows the passenger seat to fold into a table and an optional Telematics integrated communications system which consists of Services Operator, Automated Traffic Information and a Voice Activated Communications System.

2002 improvements to the Mondeo include standard Emergency Brake Assist across the range, a standard auto-relock security feature, standard automatic reverse wash/wipe and optional Telematics.
