Maserati Cambiocorsa Spyder Arrives

Sat, 17 Nov 2001
Maserati has announced the price of its new Cambiocorsa Spyder as £68,750 on the road.

Fitted with an all-new 4244 cc lightweight alloy V8 petrol engine producing 390 bhp and 451 Nm (333lb ft) torque, the new Spyder is capable of a top speed of 175 mph and a zero to 60 mph acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.

Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro, of the famed Ital Design studio, the Spyder is the first new Maserati to be developed entirely under the supervision of company owners Ferrari.

A radical innovation on the Maserati Spyder is the electronically actuated six-ratio transmission named 'Cambiocorsa', which offers computerised gear selection through paddle levers fitted behind the steering wheel.

The Cambiocorsa transmission, which is a product of Ferrari's Formula 1 experience, has four specific modes: Normal, Sport, Auto and Low Grip. These modes are linked to the electronic traction control system and, where fitted, the variable 'Skyhook' suspension setting option. This allows the driver to select the optimum combination of transmission, suspension and traction settings to match conditions and driving requirements.

The Skyhook suspension system continuously controls damper adjustments using six sensors monitoring the movement of the front wheels and the vertical and lateral movement of the car. This system, which reacts 10 times faster than any other active suspension system, vastly improves ride and handling characteristics.

Standard equipment on the Maserati Spyder includes 18-inch 15-spoke alloy wheels, electronic traction control, a powerful Bosch 5.3 anti-lock braking system and a fully automatic powered hood in lightweight fabric, which folds into a separate compartment with no intrusion on boot space.

Inside, the Spyder has a full leather interior, air conditioning, remote central locking, powered seats with two memory settings on the driver's side, power lumbar seat adjustment and an electronic 'info centre' with a 5.8-inch colour display for climate, audio and trip computer controls.

Safety and security are ensured by driver and passenger front and side airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners, body-coloured and leather-faced roll bars and an alarm and immobiliser.

For drivers who prefer a conventional manual transmission, the Maserati Spyder GT will offer this option when it arrives in the UK in the summer of next year. Prices of the Maserati Spyder GT will be announced when it goes on sale in May.
