New Polo To Debut at Frankfurt on 11th September

Wed, 15 Aug 2001
The first official pictures of Volkswagen's new Polo have been revealed. This fourth generation Polo which features an all new body structure and appearance as well as new engines and technological enhancements will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

On sale in the UK in Spring 2002, the new Polo will be available
at launch in three and five-door bodystyles, and with a choice of five engines: two petrol and three diesel. The entry-level petrol option is a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder 65 bhp, while the 1.4-litre 75 bhp unit from the existing range will also be available in five speed manual or four speed automatic guise. Two diesel engines are carried over from the current line-up: the 1.9-litre 64 bhp SDI and award-winning three-cylinder 1.4-litre 75 bhp TDI PD. A range-topping 1.9-litre TDI PD with 100 bhp (currently available in Passat) will also be on offer.

Three further petrol units will follow later in 2002, including a
1.4-litre 85 bhp FSI (direct injection petrol) and 1.2-litre three-cylinder 55 bhp engine. The existing 1.4-litre 100 bhp unit will also become available.

The new Polo is 154 mm longer than the current generation, with the wheelbase extended by 53 mm. Numerous items of optional equipment will enhance comfort and safety: in conjunction with the electronic stability program (ESP), Volkswagen is offering a hydraulic brake assistant (HBA), designed to cut emergency braking distance. Other options will include Climatic, a semi-automatic air conditioning system which uses less fuel than a conventional system and integrated rear child seats. Enhanced security features will also be more widely available.

Four trim levels: E, S, SE and Sport will be available at launch. Specification has yet to be finalised but driver and passenger front as well as side airbags will be standard across the range, along with ABS (anti-lock brakes). Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
