Volvo's 130mph Diesels, from £20,750

Fri, 08 Jun 2001
Volvo dealers are now taking orders for October deliveries of the new D5 diesel.

Unlike its Audi predecessor, this is Volvo's very own state-of-the art five-cylinder all-aluminium direct-injected common-rail diesel. It develops 163bhp at 4,000rpm and a strong 251 lb ft (340Nm) torque at 1,750rpm. This is enough to give all manual models a top speed of 130mph and a 0-60 of under 10 seconds.

The engine will be available in the S60 saloon, priced from £20,750, the S80 saloon, priced from £22,340 and the V70 estate, priced from £23,960.

Official mpg and CO2 figures are not yet available, but the combined figure of the S60 D5 is rumoured to be a very impressive 47.1mpg and the CO2 output 158 grams per kilometre, which puts it in the £130 a year VED bracket.
