Seven Seats for Toyota's New Midi MPV

Fri, 29 Jun 2001
The new Toyota Avensis Verso, which goes on sale on 1st August, will offer seven seats in two-three-two layout and ample luggage space for seven, all within a length of 4,560mm (15ft 3ins).

Engine choice will be a 2.0-litre timing chain VVT-i petrol engine offering 147bhp at 6,000rpm and maximum torque of 142 lb ft (192Nm) at 4,000rpm. Top speed of the manual is 119mph with a 0-60 of 11.2 seconds. (Auto 112mph and 0-60 12.0 seconds). Fuel economy is 32.8 mpg on the EU combined cycle with a CO2 output 202g/km for the manual and 213g/km for the automatic (both £155pa VED). The alternative engine is a 114bhp 2.0 litre D-4D common rail diesel engine stumping up 184 lb ft (250Nm) torque from 1,800 to 3,000rpm giving the Verso a top speed of 112mph and a 0-60 of 12.2 seconds. Fuel economy is 43.5mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 output 173g/km (£150pa VED). For BIK purposes, the tax bases are 22% of list price for the petrol manual; 24% of list for the petrol automatic and 19% of list for the diesel.

Clever packaging of the spare wheel under the front passenger floor helps result in a low centre of gravity and a low overall height of 1,675mm (5ft 6ins). This leaves space for an underfloor rear luggage compartment helping to give 282litres of luggage space with all seats in place or a massive 2,422 litres with all five rear seats removed. All five rear seats can be bi-folded or removed entirely. The rear compartment length is a useful 2,104mm (6ft 11ins).

Standard kit on all models is ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, lap and diagonal seatbelts for every seat, air-conditioning and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm/immobiliser and a single CD player. In addition, GLS models have rear air-conditioning, 16 inch alloy wheels, roof rails, turn-by-turn satellite navigation, front fog lamps and leather steering wheel and gear knob.

In a test by German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the Avensis Verso was found to have the shortest, safest braking distances of any MPV.

Passengers are not squeezed for shoulder width and three adults can sit across the second row in comfort. Interior width is 1,505mm, with shoulder width of 1,446mm, 1,456mm and 1,340mm in front, second and third row seats respectively. Headroom is equally useful at 1,048mm, 1,012mm and 911mm respectively. While drivers of all shapes and sizes can be accommodated. The driver's seat slides through 240mm and has 44mm of height adjustment. The steering column is adjustable for tilt.

List prices are £17,795 for the GS VVT-I manual; £18,795 for the GS VVT-I automatic; £18,795 for the GS D-4D manual; £19,795 for the GLS VVT-I manual; £20,795 for the GLS VVT-I automatic; and £20,795 for the GLS D-4D manual. All include a full three year or 60,000 mile warranty and a 12 year no rust through perforation warranty.

Colour choice is solid Pure White or metallic Silver Steel, Merlot Red, Island Green, Carlo Blue, Basalt Grey, Orb Gold or Teal Aqua. All are trimmed in Kirkfell Grey cloth.
