Autumn Facelift of Mercedes M-Class

Wed, 06 Jun 2001
The American-built Mercedes M-Class will gain some useful revisions for the 2002 model year.

Cosmetically, there are new front and rear bumpers, aerodynamic door mirrors, clear glass headlights and new 17 inch wheels with 255/60 R17 tyres on 5 and 6 cylinder models and 275/55 R17 tyres on the V8s. Inside is a new wood trimmed centre console with additional storage, two cupholders, a 12 volt accessory socket and a new automatic climage control system. Window curtain airbags are standard, but bi-xenon headlamps and the virtually essential Parktronic perimeter warning system will be optional at extra cost.

The ML430 will be dropped and replaced by the ML500 which gets the 292bhp V8 from the S-Class. This develops a massive 325lb ft (440 Nm) torque at a usefully low 2,700 rpm which shouldbe good for off road and towing. Top speed is 137mph, with 60mph coming up in 6.5 seconds. Thankfully, fuel tank capacity of all MLs has been increased to 83 litres, so reckon on £66 to fill it up.

The even quicker 347bhp ML55 AMG will cointinue, distinguished from its lesser brethren by a silver painted radiator grille. The V6 320 petrol and 5-cylinder 270 CDI also continue.
