Hot New SEAT Leon on its way to the UK

Fri, 18 May 2001
At the Barcelona Motor Show yesterday, SEAT launched a hot new version of its Leon 20VT which will be coming to the UK next January.

To be hand-built at the SEAT Sport facility at Martorell using Leon 20 VTs straight from the production line, the new Leon Cupra R has a twin-intercooled 210bhp version of the VAG 1.8 litre 20 valve turbo. Peak power comes in at quite a low 5,800 rpm and peak torque of 270Nm (199lb ft) at 2,100 rpm. Top speed is conservatively estimated at 237kph (148mph), 0 to 60 mph will come up in around 6.8 seconds and some very impressive in gear acceleration figures are also promised. First prototypes are on 17" wheels through which can be seen huge ventilated front discs and Brembo four pot calipers. Launch colour is Emocion Amarillo, a very pale metallic creamy yellow.

In direct contradiction to earlier 'scoop' news reports, the new car will be front wheel drive only because that is deeped to give it a better sporting feel.
