Today's Highs and Lows at BCA Blackbushe

Fri, 02 Feb 2001
Last week’s high prices continued today. But, according to one of the largest used car dealers in the country, cars are no longer selling through to the public in quantities that justify the prices paid at auction. Sensible dealers stocked up heavily while prices were at rock bottom in November and, so far, these same dealers have been paying a lot more to replace sold stocks. But if the replacement cars don’t sell, as is now starting to happen, they will stop buying and prices will fall back even before the used market becomes flooded with part-exchanges and de-fleeted cars in March. High prices paid today included £9,000 for a 36,000 mile 99T Passat 1.8SE Turbo; £8,750 for a 52,000 mile 98R BMW 316i Coupe, £8,300 for a 129,000 mile 97R Mercedes C200 Classic automatic; £8,150 for a 19,000 mile 2000W Mondeo 2.0iLX automatic; £5,100 for a 52,000 mile 97R Vectra 1.8GLS in ‘Doom Blue’; £5,075 for a 6,000 mile 99T new Clio 1.2RN; £4,800 for a 78,000 mile 97R Peugeot 406 1.9LXTD; £4,300 for a 54,000 mile 97P Peugeot 406 2.0iLX; and £4,000 for a 16,000 mile 99T Punto 60S 5-door, the last of a batch all in refrigerator white. But there were one or two bargains. These included a 14,000 mile 97P Mondeo 2.0i Ghia (1997 model with a four stamp service history), sold for £4,850; a 61,000 mile 97P Omega 2.5 V6 GLS automatic, sold for £5,100; and, smart buy of the day to my eyes, a 48,000 mile 98S Honda Shuttle 2.3iLS 7-seater, sold for just £8,825, a good £600 under mileage-adjusted trade book for an ultra-reliable MPV.
