Private Buyers Still Paying for Status

Fri, 16 Feb 2001
German ex-fleet cars remained big money at auction today, largely due to the presence of private buyers both in the auction halls and opening their wallets at dealers premises. Dealers will still pay high prices, but only if they already have a deposit and are sure of an instant sale. But, knowing full well that an undersupplied market is likely to be swamped in four weeks time, very few dealers are buying for stock. A 20,000 mile 98R Audi A3 1.8SE made an enormous £10,800; a 38,000 mile BMW 318Ti Compact without sunroof, a/c or alloys sold for £8,725; an 80,000 mile 98S Mercedes C180 Classic with the twin advantages of a/c and an autobox sold for £8,950; a 79,000 mile 97R Audi A4 1.8 T Sport sold for £7,425. Even a 104,000 mile 97R VW Golf GTi Mk III 5-door with a/c made a serious £5,125. The German stock led, but others were not that far behind. One dealer paid £5,000 to secure a 51,000 mile 97R Toyota Carina E 1.8Si Liftback when even Glasses Guide told him to stop bidding at £3,975. Someone else paid a staggering £9,450 for a 25,000 mile 97R Volvo V40 2.0iCD Estate. And the crazy gang even included someone immune to all the news reports who stumped up £7,400 for an 81,000 97R Ford Explorer on Firestone tyres. If there was a bargain of the day, it had to be an 18,000 mile 2000W BMW 323CI automatic coupe which sold for £19,900 (compared to last weeks £21,400 for a similar car), but only because it came with no documentation of any kind.
