Auction Prices Fall as Dealers Clear Decks for March

Wed, 28 Feb 2001
Prices of some part-exchanges were lower today as smaller dealers with cash flow problems were forced to clear out their back lots for the expected influx of March 1st trade-ins. I also saw quite a bit more variety than had been usual over the last month and I think these two trends are set to continue. Any bread and butter cars more than ten year old now usually make less than £500. Proof came in the form of a tidy 89G Nova 1.3 four door that sold for £400 and a 126,000 mile 90H Orion 1.6LX got gone for £225. 92-93K is becoming the £1,000 cut-off point, with a 124,000 mile 93K Cavalier 1.8iLS 5-door selling for £825 and even an 84,000 mile 94M Escort 1.3 5-door was knocked down for just £850. I wasnt there to buy, but very nearly started waving my catalogue at the auctioneer when an exceptionally tidy, just serviced, 97,000 mile 91J Lexus LS400 stalled for another bid at £5,025. A 35,000 mile 98S Mercedes C240 V6 Classic 5-speed automatic also hit the wall on the low side at £13,550 and a 102,000 mile 98R C180 facelift Classic manual with a/c looked even better value at £6,800. Three Hondas failed to get anywhere near where the auctioneer needed them to be. A 13,000 mile 2000W Civic 1.8VTI and a 10,000 mile 2000W Accord 1.8 VTEC S both ran out of bids at £8,500, while a 5,000 mile 2000W Integra 1.8 Type-R didnt even get started at £11,000. Big money did come his way for a couple of cars, though. A 42,000 mile 97R Peugeot 306 2.0 Cabriolet which started at £7,000 bid past its reserve of £9,000 to sell for all of £9,700. While a 19,000 mile 98R MGF VVC, subject ot the infamous camshaft sprocket problem, bid to an even healthier £10,125. Spring is obviously in the air.
