Any ideas as to what could be causing my car's engine to be making a tapping noise. I'm assured by my local garage that it's not the tappets. The car is regularly serviced and the recommended Ford oil is used.

thanks

Mrs Etchells has had a 1.25 from new ( 1998 ) and is serviced by Ford. At the last service, mention was made of a noisy tappet but told it was nothing to worry about as it may just be oil not getting underneath the valve properly. I had a similar problem a few years ago with an Alfa and I honestly thought the engine was about to let go but it stopped as quickly as it started.

Could it be the clutch release bearing? Again that makes quite a noise and has been present since we got the car.

Really I have no idea except I had a tappet type of noise on a Cavalier and I was informed, and shown, that the noise was comng from the electrical blocks on the top of each cylinder.

I know thats not a clever description.

Has the noise been there since you've owned the car, or is it just recently?

Re: Mark and his noise on the Cavalier. It's generally the tick over valve (solenoid) that clatters away. Maybe the same applies to your Ford?

The Clutch release bearings in the Fiesta are normally noisey, the salesman told me it's something to do with them been heavy duty? Anyway, mine are noisey and have been from new, but it doesn't seem to cause a problem as it's meant to do it...

Can't help with the tappet though, mine's quite quiet.

it's only started comparatively recently. It was only when I listened to another Fiesta of the same noise that I was struck as to the difference in noise. My car's done 60k miles.
