No, I don't intend to do speeds like that so we're talking about a totally hypothetica scenario. But someone asked this question regarding 80 mph, which is illlegal - so why not 130 ? !!!

my god, someone wants to drive at 80mph - thats the most heinous of crimes, they should be taken out and shot! Seriously, get over it! Theres far more important things out there to worry about! On a trip once where I averaged 120mph plus (cruising mainly at 125-130 and up to 150 at times) the fuel consumption wasn't too bad, I didn't bother to work it out but the 10gal tank was being drained in well under 2 hours! Still, at least we got there quickly!

My Passat PD130 B5.5's fuel computer's instantaneous readout would show around 30mpg at a steady indicated 115.

I don't know what it was at 130, I never took it to that speed. FYI at a steady 80, it would show 55 - 60mpg. The computer reading was about 5% optimistic compared with real, measured fuel usage.

I don't think you really expect a definative answer to your question but my guess would be a BMW 330d.

If you don't consider a 3 series to be family sized, my next guess would be a 530d.

I take it you are getting my thinking...

Debatable while you have just crashed into a load of cars in a tailback you didn't see at 130 mph, or while you have been pulled over and been told you face a 12 months ban and a £ 500 fine. If you really want to test this, take the car to Mallory Park, not the M6.

Who said anything about the UK? I value my licence too much to speed excessively over here. I always keep within 3 points/£60 fine territory these days.

Sorry I forgot about Germany, where there are few autobahn speed limits. However, it's still extremely risky to drive at such speeds.
