Skoda Yeti 4x4 - Which engine? - The BarracksFV

Hi

Never though I'd say it but we are going to test drive a Skoda....the Yeti 4x4.

Assuming it's OK and we decide to go ahead, I'm not sure about the best choice of engine. The 100 or 140 2 litre diesels seem like the best bet but I know HJ goes on about the problems with the particulate filters in modern diesels.

Has anyone had experience of either of these VW engines....any advice gratefully received

I'd always go for the more powerful engine provided that your budget allows it: more performance with little difference in economy. The diesels are now common-rail and seem not to have the DPF problems that the PD engines have: regeneration seems to happen more smoothly with CR engines.

That said, don't go for a diesel if your mileage is going to be low or mainly in town - as you are looking for a 4wd version, I'd imagine that isn't the case.

It should be a good choice: I'm not sure what the delivery delay is like, but hopefully not as bad or uncertain as the Hyundai ix35. I haven't driven either this or a Yeti, but I do drive a Skoda CR diesel and I would agree with the verdivt of the road tsters that the Yeti is a much better car than the ix35. Auto Express has just voted it car of the year.

I tend to agree and the 140 was the engine of choice...I was just concerned about the issue that HJ had mentioned. We do about 10K mileage at the moment (& this is likely to increase) but we are also looking for a 10 year run with this (with any luck!!).

we are testing tomorrow and I hope to see what all the positive praise for the Yeti is all about. We are hoping it ticks a lot of boxes.

Having been a long supporter of VW, I hope that the bits that go into making the Yeti are as good as the long term test that Auto Express pulled out of the Tiguan in their recent 60K test!!

First post for a long time!

I have a 2wd Yeti and the 110 bhp engine is pretty gutless. It has a dreadfully narrow power band so you are swapping cogs a lot. Skoda don't offer a 140bhp engine in 2wd but VW do in the Tuguan and I can see why.

If you do try the Yeti make sure you try one with a few miles on it, mine has been plagued with rattles and they are getting materially worse as the miles mount up.

Check the way the rear seat folds too, it's really good in theory but the the execution is a Heath Robinson affair.

My considered opinion after 3 months / 5000 miles with the Yeti is that it's OK but nowhere near as good as the hype.
