My Hyundai dealer tells me all new tyres have 8mm tread depth. My Hyundai 130 Comfort 1.6 has covered 22000 miles since new and has used 4mm. With 2.4mm to go (down to the minimum allowed tread) this means I will probably get 35200 miles from the set (assuming no damage). Is this good reasoning?

We replace our tyres when they reach 3mm. Yes you can go down to the full legal minimum, but how do you judge 1.6mm or less than 3mm accurately?

Yes we do have a recession as well. It's just that I'm more concerned about putting the safety of ourselves and others first rather than try and guess when the tyres have worn a further 1.4mm

If you let your tyres wear right to the legal limit, when you put new ones on, you'll wonder why you didn't put them on sooner. The ride will be better; the steering sharper, braking more secure and you'll probably get a mpg or two more.

Once the 3mm limit has been reached, get on to google for the replacements.

Tyre's don't wear evenly i.e x,000 miles per mm. They wear quicker the less tread they have.

I also advocate changing at 3mm, especially as we come up to winter. An extra 5mm of tread makes a big difference in road holding on damp roads and snow should prove less of a problem.

Can you explain that please?

I'll accept their circumference reduces slightly as they wear and so they'll revolve more often for distance travelled and therefore they'll wear slightly more quickly, but probably not measurably.

The rubber compound is not the same at all tread depths.Traditionally, they get softer the more the tread wears and is one of the reasons why tyres used for racing are buffed down (the other is block squirm).

Mind you, some sporty front wheel drive cars eat tyres so I not sure that is true for all these days.

Changed my 3mm tires after 32k miles this time last year, suspect I could have got to 40k+ on them. Now on 50k and it was the best thing I ever did changing them, all that snow we had last winter, no problems at all.

Best thing is the Michelin Energy tires are hardly wearing, they'll do 50k at the present rate and as I'll be selling the car before they're worn. I could have worn my old tires to 1.6mm, but who would I have been benefited not myself, the next owner. Get'em changed early, it makes sense.

I assume this is after rotating them? Your fronts should have worn down quite a bit faster than the rears.

I hesitate to say this, but I'm the sort of person who hates to throw anything away before it is completely worn out. I run mine until 1.6 mm and use a tyre guage to check them.

To be honest, I don't notice much difference when I put new tyres on, and while I know that all the research suggests that one should change them at 3 mm, I find braking perfectly adequate at 1.6 mm.

I also use a tyre gauge and would still question how one can accurately assess the 1.6mm legal minimum. Judging 1mm differences is easy.

As regards tyre rotation, our previous Mazda Premacy always wore its tyres evenly, despite being front wheel drive, so we always had to replace the complete set at a time.

Get yourself a PCL depth gauge from ebay. They're only a few quid and are what MOT testers use.

Myself, I change at 2mm.

The tyre wear indicators are set at 1.6mm.
