Is there such a thing as a car with a choice of horns (loud or soft)?

I don't know of any. But if your horn is loud enough to be heard by somebody in another vehicle at motorway speed, it's going to be far too loud if you just want to give a gentle warning to a pedestrian or a cyclist.

Renault in the 1950's had a switch on some models and a two pressure push on others to change between town and country horns.

Just the thing for that toerag who drifted into my lane this afternoon, one hand on the mobile and the other apparently caressing the front seat passenger. A quick blast from the Barfleur would have made him sit up and pay attention....

Memories. The Citroen CX GTI that i mini cabbed in early 80,s (Dont Ask)

Fitted with air horns as standard, Town and Country setting, quick press for Town, loud, keep stalk pressed down for Country, full bank of horns, obscene.

Possible the loudest horn i have ever heard fitted as standard, QE2 comes to mind.

Worked a treat in Central London with dopey pedestrians on another planet, just a pair of shoes with socks in !

I noticed in Tehran the other month, that at night many coaches' and trucks' air-horns are switched over to make a sort of pathetic sneezing sound, and to be honest, it was so bizarre it gave me a fit of giggles after a while.

Here's a few road/car snaps..

S class MB's came with 2 horn settings, one was a gentle soothing sound, but flick the switch over and it would clear a blocked autobahn.

With all cars I have ever owned, I could vary the loudness just by touching the button gently. If you barely engage the pad, push or whatever so that there is barely an electrical contact, the horn gives a friendly little wavering toot. Hammer the button and it gives the full blast.

You just need to practice finger-light control for all stages in between.
