Citroen Xantia - Timing Belt - luckyrooney123

The timing belt on my Xanti 2.0 HDI is nearing renewal.I would normally change the belt myself but having read the Haynes manual the job is best done with the electronic tensioner. Is this absolutely necessary?

My personal opinion is that I wouldn't have thought so, bearing in mind the fact that it starts to wear and stretch as soon as you start the engine so its not going to keep a precise setting for long.

If you usually change the belt yourself you will be familier with how tight it needs to be, but I say again that is only my personal opinion. I would like to know why they specify this method, maybe its just due to the incompetance of some mechanics.

Thanks for the reply, i've replaced Discovery,Mondeo and Citroen bx belts before but this will be the first i've done on this car, so the use of a "special" tool has made me wary.
