Was this a diesel engine? Unlikely to have been fuel related if so, as it's diffiuclt to get diesel to burn. Didn't start in the airfilter by any chance? There was a thread here (I think) not so long ago about discarded cigarette butts starting fires in the air intakes of following cars....

No, it was a direct injection gasoline and it did-not appear to start in the air filter,
