I put forward the the `smart phone` - as you may know, I`ve been getting used to one this last week.

1) you can phone for help
2)Text for help
3)Skype for help
4) Morse code at night for help, with the flash (was it a candle at 20+ miles)

5) Flog it to someone passing by and use the money to go home in a taxi
6) Google maps + built in Sat detection, (find your way out of the Blair Witch Woods) soon to be charge free Sat Nav - thus giving all the dedicated Nav players the boot.
7) You could short out the battery to start a fire to semaphore/smoke signal for help.

Any more?
Or you may not want help, but instead could offer help, amusement or irritation on forums all around the world - from that remote swamp - with just a transmitter poking over the nearby ridge.

A large bottle of water with a wide diameter top......

...will help with lots of things a phone can't do - especially for shy elderly drivers imprisoned in a motorway jam.

May I nominate the humble chrome hubcap?
many possible uses include:

emergency dog food/water bowl
makeshift frisbee for bored kids
usefull jack-stand for wheel changing on soft verges
makeshift "get me home" puddle-scoop for collecting water for leaking radiator
can be used for "flashing" at search and rescue aircraft aka American military mirror
could be used as a cooking -pan on a wood fire if broken down somewhere in the wilds
two of them tied to feet - snowshoes
mount one on top of car ariel to form a radar relecter

must be more .....;-)
