Hmmm. Centrifugal force?

Gues that's why race bikes have wet sumps... [1]

Due to the fact that the new M5 can achieve something like 1.2g round corners, it has some gizmo (nothing too techie from me I'm afraid) that pumps extra oil into whichever cylinder bank happens to be on the "inside" to stop the oil draining off!

I presume the same applies to racing bikes too.

Doubt it. Racing cars have dry sumps to cope with this phenominon. A bike will be banked over on corners so all oil will be forces into the deepest point of the sump.

Therefore I reckon that bikes will have not need a dry sump to ensure a constant flow of oil at all times.

I'm intrigued now. Anyone know for sure?

Yes.

If a bike is in a corner, it has to be in a position whereby the force acting "downwards" (resultant of centripetal and gravity) from the bike's centre of gravity passes though the tyres' contact points, otherwise the bike will topple. Thus, the force must be down the bike's vertical, so the oil will be in the same part of the engine as when it's at a standstill. Another minor point is that it will be experiencing a force holding it in the sump greater than the force of gravity, so pumping it up to the top of the engine will be harder.

This does assume that the centre of gravity of the bike/rider combination is on the centreline. If the rider is hanging off the side of the bike, this will shift the centre of gravity of the bike/rider just off line, but probably not enough to be significant.

Doesn't work for sidecars, of course, barring the Sidewinder.

Sorry if I'm becoming physicist in residence (see water fuelled car thread)...

...and what this means for the coffee in the cups in the holders is that it won't slop over the side in corners.

However, when you accelerate it will land in your lap, of course...

I've been in the new M5 going around a roundabout (as a passenger) faster than I would normally drive on most A class roads! It's an amazing piece of machinery and I wouldnt doubt that it needs something to keep the engine full of oil! There is even rev limiting LEDs which change once the oil temperature is warm enough, plus of course an oil temp gauge (very handy, all cars should have them!).

How about dinner plate holders, now that would be nice together with a 12V microwave oven for warming up the sunday roast! I reckon that all cars too should have a small wash basin to clean those grubby hands after checking the oil, oh and while we are at it, an alarm clock to wake you up in the morning!

This could be a godsend for those professional victims who specialise in contrived compensation claims, like the MacDonalds scalding coffee scam!

"My client felt an agonising pain as his knee touched down on the roundabout, causing him to lose control and slide into an oncoming tree at 3 mph. Sub sequrnb forensic examination examination showed that extremely hot coffee with toxic content spilling from the manufacturer's dangerous appliance had caused third degree burns to his expensive leather clothing, and in his concern for the welfare of this, he was caused to suffer an entirely momentary lapse of concentration with catastrophic results. He charges that the manufacturer is grossly negligent in that it nowhere warns of possible spillage of liquids from these fitments if the machine is diverted from the vertical and that his life has been ruined as a result. He is however, willing to go away and live in Marbella and not say anything to the papers about this if he is paid the sum of $3m by the defendant..."
