95 2.0 2 frequent idling problems,stalls&high revs - peter973
Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 X20XEV engine

My car has 2 frequent idling problems when stationary, but it doesn't do it all the time.

1) Engine idling ok around 800-1000rpm, then suddenly revs drop & engine stalls.
If I'm quick enough, put foot on accelerator, I can catch it & keep revs up.

2) Engine revs. too high & constantly oscillates betwen 1500-2000rpm.

Any ideas what the problem could be & where to start ??

I'll take the flexi hose off the Idle Air Control Valve & squirt some carb cleaner into inlet, before taking it apart.

Can I run the engine with the flexi hose off to circulate the carb cleaner through the valve, does anyone know ??

you can if you are carefull, lift it of completely and it will stall, far better to remove and clean out properly

that is a very usefull site as in pictures but its not the whole story, oil should not be getting up there, it will be a blocked breather that is the main problem, do a search and you should find a post of mine detailing what needs to be done

Is the breather the 1" size tube coming from the engine to the large air intake flexi tube through that white 90deg connector in the 1st photo ??

no that breather is the one that is putting the oil mist up to the trottle body and iac, the one you want is the smaller bore one from the rocker cover to the throttle body below the butterfly
