Anybody know if is is straightforward to replace the bulb/bulbs which illuminate the heater controls on a 1998 Fiat Punto 60S?
I don't want to damage any of the fragile looking plastic surrounding these items.

Yep.
Pull of the fan knob. One allen key under the spindle.
Two allen keys under the bottom of the plate.
Have two bulbs ready !
