2006 (55) 1.6 Petrol - Oil Consumption - crh079
I have a Pug 307 that is burning (in my opinion) a massive amount of oil, it is using in the region of 1 litre every 1500-2000 miles. The garage tells me that this is an acceptable amount of oil to be burning. No other car I have owned (including a 1970s mini) has burned this much oil.

What is an average amount of oil to burn for a car like this?

Thanks

Most handbooks mention that an engine can consume up to 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles. Any more than that and something is wrong.

No two engines are the same. Take for example my 2.2 Vectra-C Petrol. My previous one used approx 1 litre of oil every 2,000 to 2,500 miles. It got written off in an accident and the replacement (another Vectra-C with the same cc engine) hasn't used a drop of oil in over 6,000 miles.

How many miles has your pug done? Was the oil changed at a low mileage? If so, then it's *possible* that changing the oil too early stopped the engine from bedding in correctly, and thus why it's now consuming a bit of oil.
