Would anyone know the size of the 12 point spline drive for the driveshaft to g'box flange bolts on a Mk2 Golf?
Hopefully this will save me guessing, followed by crawling under the car in a car park, getting it wrong and feeling like a bit of a plonker as I ask to exchange a brand new tool I've just covered in grease and detritus!
Regards,
Rob F

You'll probably have to buy a set anyway Rob
Cheaper that way, too.
I think it's a #8 size, but please don't quote me.
Make sure all the gunk is removed from the bolt head beforehand otherwise you will round off the splines and have one hell of a job removing them

Dave,
Yep, you're right - had to buy a set.
Spot on with the size!

And you got them all out, no problems?
(I suppose if the dustcaps were still there, you'd be OK - it's when the plastic caps have been left off and the cap screws fill up with crud, things get interesting...)

No problems getting them out. I took your advice on cleaning them out first - it really does make a hell of a difference.

Incidentally, my old man (perhaps due to diminishing eyesight from advancing years) thought that "some b*****" had rounded off the "torx" bolts holding the driveshafts of his Audi. He removed all 12 by tapping them on the shoulder with a hammer and chisel, and was most irritated to discover he actually damaged two of them during removal. It was only when he took them in for replacements that the guy told him they weren't torx at all.

I have to admit - gaah!
I'm not your 'old man', as I am sure you are aware.
But...
I did nearly the same thing.
(Hangs head in shame).
