Whilst discussing the rise in the congestion tax on another forum, a friend mentioned he had received a leaflet from Transport for London, with the following proposal:

"Anyone else had the TFL leaflet on diesel vechicles through the letter box this week???

if your diesel van/car isn't euro4 compliant then he wants to charge you 200 pounds per day to be within the m25... even if you live there!!!!!!

if he gets his way it'll start in 2007."

I hadn't heard this before. Looks like he wants to raise a few more quid for another trip to Cuba! (Hope he stays there!)

Another fantastic idea from Red Ken. Bring back the GLC.

Not seen the leaflet so can't comment, but with a lot of the transport issues that are around at the moment, there doesn't seem to be much preperation.

For example there is talk of introducing driving charges in my city to encourage people to use buses, which I agree with, but not when the bus costs £8 per day for two people and there is only one service in the morning and the last leaves at 5.15pm. What choice would I have but to drive when I work outside these hours? I already pay £36 per month for a car park space, plus petrol, so I don't take commuting lightly but I have no other choice.

Get the public transport infrastructure up to speed BEFORE pushing people out of their vehicles.

Why cant Ken introduce this latest scheme over a few years allowing people to change their car?

"Why cant Ken introduce this latest scheme over a few years allowing people to change their car?"

Because he wouldn't raise the revenue. The government is rapidly running out of money, if the latest ruling on booze/fags goes through the courts then it will get worse. More tax rises on the way.

Oh stop ranting against Ken and read the proposal. It is phased in, and it doesn't apply to cars!!!!

Yes OK you are right, I should have read the link properly. However I will make a prediction. If the initial implementation of this scheme is perceived as a success (however one defines that I don't know), then it WILL be extended to cars, sold under the increasingly dubious environmental banner. However, this won't be until just after an election...

I'm no particular fan of Ken's, but that is alarmist rubbish and not what they are proposing at all. Read the link above for the actual proposal, which sounds like a good plan to me.

Well this odious little man has invested a fortune in his camera scheme, so he won't waste any opportunity to use them to raise taxation for anything he can think of.

Now the congestion charge is established, he can create taxes at will using the existing infrastructure at minimal cost.

Good God I hate red ken as much as the next guy, but really MLC. That assertion is based on heresay, and does not stack up to the facts in any way shape opr form.

I bet you take more care in cases before they go to the CPS.

He'll laugh on the other side of his face when several global financial organisations announce they will vacate their offices in London because they are sick of all of the carp that is going on.

Those of you with a vote must vote against him and get rid of him and his silly ideas

I,m surprised that nobody has commented on what seems obvious to me.The olympic games budget is going only one way, and they are going to get every bit of money they can, from whatever source open to them.

We can look forward to more stealth taxes to pay for them, but then you "suverners" will reap the benefits later.
More from Red Ken! - midlifecrisis
Quite right. Info from a friend that I thought I'd pass on. If you think that this won't eventually affect the car driver, I think you're sadly mistaken.

Looking at the link posted about the press release, it is only applying to diesel engined lorries, coaches, buses, heavier vans and minibuses. B ut when it comes in, it will apply 365 days a year.

Also the Taxi Emissions Strategy requires all London licensed taxis to meet Euro III emission standards for particulates and oxides of nitrogen by mid 2008.

You have to ask when (not if) this will be extended to all cars.

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

From the FAQs page www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/low-emission-zone/faq.asp

"It is not proposed that cars be included in the LEZ at this stage, although the Mayor has asked TfL to look at the implications of including cars at a later date."

Is this proposal coming from the same Ken Livingstone that allegedly runs around in diesel taxis, at the tax payers expense?

The same Ken Livingstone that appears to enjoy all the trappings of high office, and appears to have lost touch with those people who elected him?

The same Ken Livingstone who may be baffled why his local shops have put up their prices to cover the extra costs of goods, as their delivery prices have drastically increased?

The same Ken Livingstone who may be puzzled why small businesses are failing, and big business is relocating to more affordable areas of the country?

The same Ken Livingstone who may wonder why his beloved people have kicked him out of his cushy job?

Stop whingeing.
Southerners have the Houses of Parliament, Tate Modern, The Olympics, The Thames Barrier and a London Mayor who for all his faults is at least vaguely connected to the electorate - see his prior Conservative opponents - and for that matter his prior Labour opponents.

Not to mention having the M25, the BA wheel, the Dome and probably the first supercasino.

And Thames Water.

You are all spoilt for choice. If you want us northerners to pay for it, think again.

Mind you whingeing is what southerners appear good for.
