The interior light still works, (can be turned on/off manually) but the light does not come on when the door is opened - do and VAG owners know where the switch is ?

The switch is built-in to the doorlock.
The lock is sold as a unit but it is possible to replace the micro-switch if you are into diy.

Does that mean taking all the trim off, etc, etc, because I'm looking to sell the car at the end of the month

Do you mean any door? If more than one door, I would suspect the problem is elsewhere.

Ashok - had'nt thought about that, and there is usually only me in the car - will check later

Alec - very useful link if you ever want to get inside a VAG door, which given the window winder failure rate, a lot of people might find useful.
However, a case of RTFM and 'how did the switch get in that position' have resolved my problem, along with the realisation that the lights stopped working after I had some 'young people' in the car.
