Thank you all for your replies so far.
No Do$h the car is manual and I don't drive 'on the brakes.'
I realise now that I was pretty naive not to request the pads and discs be kept back at the time for later inspection.
Looks like this might be an expensive lesson in vehicle maintenance for me ; (

They'd find a worn set for your inspection. Generally I'd decline all offers of 'consumables' work that "needs doing" under a service and DIY, or get Halfords/Kwik-fit to do it. I gave up on services years ago, when the warranty ran out and DIY. It's the only way you can be sure it's been done.

SonHouse,
Several factors can acellerate pad and disc wear.
For example, if the car is left outside a lot, the discs can corrode. When you next use the car, applying the brakes means that the pads have to scrape off a fine layer of rust. That means a rough surface for the pads to initially run on, which will increase wear on the pads, as well as removing the corroded metal. This can increase even more if the car is only used for short journeys as the brakes are never warm enough to dry out any moisture.
Also pads are a lot harder these days due to asbestos being outlawed in the construction of them, and this subsequently increases disc wear as well.
There have been previous threads mentioning excessive pad & disc wear on Puntos - for example:-

Do you live near the sea?

Or was the car stored in a wet field for a year prior to delivery?........
It's worth checking the date stamps on the car against the VRD.

I had a renault 5 and went through disks every 18 months - that was around 5000 miles. They were replaced for corrosion not wear and the pads got ground down with the rust.
Lack of use of the brakes was the cause, along with living outside.

sonhouse has done 10k miles in a year.
so that is approx 200 miles a week or 30 miles a day on average.
(or if used only during weekdays, 40 miles a working day for a 5 day working week ).
that should not give cause for rust, or should it?
bearing in mind that other puntos have suffered this fate, it may be something to do with the punto's brake & disc material.

My Saab 9-3 had an MOT this time last year and was it said that the discs were right on the limit for replacement. I decided not to replace them and at this year's MOT they weren't even mentioned, after another 15000 miles. I did some research into replacement prices and Brembo discs were one quarter of the price of SAAB's own 'brand'. I suppose by the time you have paid to remove and replace them, getting them skimmed doesn't make much sense? I was suprised that the wear permitted was only 2.5 mm per side of a disc.

Thanks, just wanted to exclude as many possible causes as possible.
