Mercedes Benz Leeds - £95 per hour on MB, £55 per hour on smarts.

this hurts .. but just out of interest: in Spain at main Peugeot dealer, 3 months ago, hourly rate on wall was 27 Euros (£18ish)

Mercedes Benz Leeds - £95 per hour on MB, £55 per hour on smarts.
£40 difference just because the badge is different? Same staff, same premises, same company?
And, comparing a base level A class with a top spec Smart, similar value cars too?
Ouch. Cynical or what?

The independent garage that services our Citroens charges about £27. Mind you, he is limited on what he can do on C5s, as he doesn't have the full diagnostic equipment. Has anyone one else come across this problem with small independent garages? Could be a common problem with all of the modern electronics on cars these days.

When smarts first arrived they were sold through dedicated smart dealerships. These then charged around £45 an hour. When MB started selling smarts a few tried to charge MB A class prices (some still do) but word got round and no one with smarts took them to MB garages. MB garages then started charging smart centre labour rates and most still do, hence the difference.

Has word reached the MB drivers yet? If I ran one then I'd be kicking up a stink next time it needed servicing.
Perhaps there is a potential market in add-on smart badges to cover a three-pointed star?
Yet another reason not to buy an MB.

My local dealer - Chelsea BMW - I think currently has the record as discussed a few weeks ago @ £153 an hour.
When I was last there on an insurance job, I asked them whether this could be true as when I last serviced the car there in December the labour charge was "only" £100 an hour. Sadly it is true.

As an MB driver, I get charged less than half the dealer's rate by a first-class independent mechanic. He's mobile, so I don't even have to suffer the inconvenience of delivering the car for servicing. And I have good reason to think that he's more competent than anyone at the main dealers. I'd encourage anyone to find a good independent servicing garage, many of which are staffed by refugees from main-dealer attitudes, policies and practices.

Totally agree.
'Prestige marque' main dealers can have the most appalling attitudes - independents who provide a good alternative service deserve our support.

Totally agree.
Me too.
'Prestige marque' main dealers can have the most appalling attitudes
When we owned both an A-class and a 5, I once finished a call to the BMW service department and wished I had tape recorded it so that I could play it to the local MB service department as an aexample in how to treat customers.

I get my C Class diesel MB serviced by a good mobile man. Rarely goes past £150 for parts and labour, I don't go near Purslows the main dealer in town, they charge mega bucks.
|
I think (it's been a long time) SMC Rover charge £70 an hour, my local independent £35.
The P6 goes to the local independent and they are a great bunch.
|
BUT.... How much does a mechanic get paid per hour?
Cheers, Sofa Spud

It didnt work that way when I worked for fords.you was paid a wage.plus bonus.ie if a job has a time given by man.and you did it faster bonus was time difference which is why on a service some bits can be looked at pretty quick.it can also mean some things are not looked at to gain bonus. Not saying it is still the same as am not working for any MD.but it used to be
