i remember reading once that rotary engines should only use mineral oil, not synthetic. Is this correct, and if so, why?!

Rotary engines use a total-loss oil injection system to get lubrication to the tip seals - hence the engines naturally 'consume' oil and mineral oil tends to perform best in these circumstances. Not sure if this applies to the latest Renesis engines, but certainly applied to the old 12A, 13A series etc.
