Regarding the retained values quoted in the likes of What Car magazine, would this be a guide to future retail value of the car, a price for private sale or trade in value?

Probably closest to trade in value, and not necessarily all that accurate. If you are buying new, they may help you to plan depreciation - but I wouldn't expect to be able to save up £x over the next three years and be able to buy a currently new example after 60k miles.
www.tins.co.uk has a finance calculator that shows its own retained value estimate if you want it online - this is actually the balloon payment at the end of its PCP agreements. This does of course vary with age (24-42 months) and mileage.

I would have thought that for any model less than 2 years old, a quoted retained value will be a bit of a guess. The marque will be a good guide, but otherwise it's wait-and-see?
