Accuracy of Parkers - legacylad
I am shortly having to sell my Legacy GLS Estate (my third) due to purchase of new business which necessitates running a commercial. The purchase includes a sign written van so I need to sell privately within the next 4 to 6 weeks.
Parkers guide recommends £3025 for a private sale and £3295 from a main dealer. However, my local dealer has a 97 P on the forecourt at £4995!! older than mine and without my elec sunroof.I was told to advertise above £4k and reduce to £4k, which seems very optimistic. These figures are way in excess of Parkers, so rather than waste time and money advertising in various sources, should I try Autotrader only and at what realistic price? The stats are 98R, MOT Dec, tax Nov, 83k miles, 4 brand new tyres, never abused.
Just how accurate is Parkers, because the price diff between a guaranteed car from a dealer, and a private sale, albeit with fsh and warranted mileage, seems minimal?

A car is worth what the buyer will pay and the seller accept. If you want to dispose of the vehicle within a tightish timescale you could try putting it on EBay with a sensible reserve that would represent your minimum acceptable level. A trader friend of mine has used EBay wiht great success and has sometimes been pleasantly surprised, he reckons you can get somewhere between trade and forecourt price on a good day. Accurate and honest description and good photos make a big difference.

Good luck, MGs

Parkers tends to be pretty good for common, volume stuff - Fiestas, Vectras, etc. and okay on the prestige stuff too. Where it falls down is specialist stuff, where the generalist buyer probably wouldn't pay what enthusiasts would.

Their prices for old shape Minis were, last time I looked, comically low - well below what a trader would give within the enthusiast market, except that essentially all Mini owners are enthusiasts now. I think, to perhaps a slightly lesser extent, the same applies to the Legacy.

That said, there are quite a few sub £4k 1998 Legacy estates out there, so £4995 is probably a tad optimistic.

Parkers isn't that accurate, as some of my customers have been finding out.

We pay hundreds of pounds for a subscription to Glass's guide, yet some of them seemed to think that the freebie Parkers was just as accurate. :-)

It's only any use as a very rough guide, I've known it to be a fair way out on what Glass's have said, if I was you I would click the link on the left and try and get a Glass's valuation, that will give you a much cleaer picture.

Have you tried the link, on the left, to Auto Trader.
I have found it quite useful in getting an idea of what is being actually asked for a given vehicle.
I looked at Parkers and its rival but found the AT search the most helpful. I finished up very happy with my buy via AT.
I am now on the search again. Obviously I do not know the true condition of any given car but many adverts include the mileage etc.

Legacies, even estates, seem hard to sell. I don't think comparison with one at a dealers it that useful, TBH, since many people will pay a huge premium for a car from a fracnchised dealer.

Why not try the eBay route?
