Has anyone else been confronted by a strange graunching noise when the front end is bounced vigorously , occurs also whilst negotiating vicious speed humps. Copious amounts of spray grease and WD40 fail to solve noise. I have heard 2-3 other Astra's exhibit the same fault . I suspect noise is internal to the shockers , any other thoughts ?

You are not alone. It happens with other Vauxhalls as well. More than likely dry suspension bushes. My Vectra doesn't exhibit the noise during the summer or when it's raining though.

Yep, had it for a while now on my W reg Astra.
Funny enough I only had the car up on a ramp last Sunday and I think (on mine anyway) it is the rubbers fixing the torsion bar to the chassis, as it runs from wheel to wheel. I am either going to grease them or replace them.
It may be worth an investigation on yours, but I feel your pain.

I could be wrong here guys, but is the problem that the bushes are worn and the components are moving within them?. Rubber bushes are not bearings, they are supposed to operate in torsion, inner and outer faces 'fixed' to the relative components. Greasing may just diguise the problem, allowing the movement that shouldn't be there.

Still haven't sorted mine - but it started at about 20k miles on the clock so I would hope that the bushes are not worn!
Will try to have a look underneath this weekend.

My Vectra sailed through it's first ever MOT last Sept with 35k on the clock. The warranty was almost up so I got the garage to check it over in case anything was worn that the warranty policy could take care of. Nothing untoward was found.
I'm pretty sure it's dry bushes on the anti-roll bars though. When it gets warmer and better weather, I'll give them a squirt of waxoil.

That's the sort of information that I have been seeking elsewhere - is there a problem covered by warranty? The local Vauxhall wanted to charge £20 for a look then decide - I'd rather spend the money on getting rid of the creak.

I have had this problem on a Mazda and vauxhall, where when driving, there would be a graunching sound, and when inspecting the car underneath everything seemed fine. In both cases, it was a loose nut on the anti-roll bar like, but these were under so much tension when the car was parked, it was impossible to detect, only when removed, chafing could be seen on the threads where they had slid up and down in the hole at the bottom of the strut. The sound wasn't what you'd expect either.

My '52' reg Astra makes the kind of noise discussed when cold/wet/been parked up (overnight), and only on certain speedbumps. Had suspected the bushes but not too worried as the noise is only present under those conditions. Am concerned there could be a bolt having it's thread sheared off though... is there an easy way to spot if this is the case without too much dismantling?
FYI, noise first noticed at about 24k miles, only 'bill' to date has been 2 front tyres at 27k miles - now done 31k and noise very rarely apparent.
