Anyone help please? Many years ago when a teen-ager, I can remember that my dad's Morris 1800 "land-crab" suffered from a problem when you finished driving and the engine was hot, when the engine was turned off the coolant overflowed in copious quantities and had to be topped up before the next journey could be started.
I cannot remember what the fix was - this is going back to about 1974. I've now come across an aquaintance who has the same problem with a Volvo 740 (petrol engined too).
Any ideas please.

I always thought "heat soak" was the reason. IE the water stops circulating around the block, the hot block then boils the water surrounding it. Many cars have the electric fan stay on after the the car is turned off, I would think the Volvo would be one. Soooo a look at the electric feed to the fan is called for maybe

This shouldn't be a problem on any of the 240/740 range, and many of them didn't have electric fans.
I'd check the general state of the cooling system, and flush it thoroughly. Replace the overflow filler cap, and check/replace the thermostat.

Used to have this problem on the Commer I fitted a slightly higher pressure radiator cap which reduced the problem. Problem there, as with the 1800 you had, is that the heat doesnt dissipate when the fan & coolant stop when you turn it off.
Electric fan is almost certainly the best solution since it will get rid of the heat faster anyway. As Cliff says its a sign that all is not right with the system, a good flush & clean of the radiator might also work wonders.
